water-way advice.

hello, im in the middle of sticking a set of dual carbs on my 8v gt2 and could do with a bit of help. iv taken the clynder head off the car so i could replace all the main gaskets and give it all a good clean but after removing the original intake manifold i noticed i was left with a water hole for the pre-heat for the auto-choke on the original pierburg.

now the question is do i simply plug it up with something because it is no longer neaded?

or

reconnect it to the pipe that would of left the original manifold?

Are you sure that is a water way and not a breather connected to the rocker cover?

yes, im 100% sure that its a water-way.
when i took the inlet manifold off, while it was still in the engine bay, water poured out of it and the other end of the manifold as i had disconnected the hose that led into the main water tubes.

what carbs are you fitting?
i assume you don't have a manifold for them yet?

im fittin dual dellorto 40's and yes i have the correct manifold. i have everything i need from fuel pump to gasket set. everything!

no loose ends what-so-ever.

well apart from conclusion about that hole...

i don't see any reason why you can't block it up and then block the heater matrix pipe aswell
there isn't realy any way of blocking it up it may be easiest to have a small ally disc welded into the hole

that's what i had in mind, i just wasn't sure if the water would still circulate round the system properly or not.
unless anyone else can add insight to this, thats what i'll do.

my thinking is the water will circulate the same way it does on an injection head which dosen't have that pipe
the rest of it's cooling is near enough identical
you could weld a tube into it and reconect it for peace of mind
make shure the new mani isn't too close first tho

im gunna go with plugging the sweet baby jesus out of it first thing in the morning.
i really wanna get it finished now as iv not driven my rocco' in nearly 3 months and would like it running for stonor park.

Are you sure that's a waterway - could be an oil way. Need to look at the 'Haynes' manual or get a second opinion from a VW specialist.
Sorry if I sound a bit thick (been off sick with stress, but this site keeps me going).
Best to clean all out with a solvent whilst you've got the thing apart, when you put it all back together make sure all is spotless.
I've had probs with oilways (188000 miles but got it sorted).
Ensure that the cyl head is OK and not distorted (Head Gasket leak).
Check your water pump and all hoses and the oil cooler..

cheers for the advice, im gunna check everything else out and give it all a good seing to. my friend works at a vw specialist and has been seing me through on a few things.

but whatever it was it is now welded up. got it done on friday morning by my old man. he did a pretty tidy job

the head is being re-built with new oil seals and everything, not to mention cleaned on tuesday and built back up with a mk2 gti cam (decided not to use the mk3 golf gti cam i had) also a full head gasket kit will be brought. no special work done, just rebuild to original spec'.

il post a few more pics of that when its done.

also, is anyone interested in me posting pics of building the engine back up with the twin 40's?
