Fan belt

Post by Village Idiots »

I believe the correct width for fan (alternator) belts is 11.9mm
The only ones available which I can find are 10mm, does anyone know if wider ones are available and, if so, where from?

10 x 950 is the size I use in both my cars.

Mark,
Do you have the alternators with pressed steel pulley?
I have been told that the 10mm belt goes right down to the bottom of these rather than the more effective way of gripping the pulley on the sides, resulting in a greater tendency to slip slightly. If I go through standing water, not particularly deep, the charge warning light comes on for 30 seconds or so, suggesting just such slippage.

The parts catalogues specify a 9,5X950mm belt for non air con & non power steering models. It could be that your pulley is worn if the belt still slips when tensioned correctly.

It should be a V belt and not a toothed one. A toothed belt with "wind" itself into the pulleys causing it to burn and squeal. If you're changing it it's a good idea to clean the pulleys off before fitting the new belt. Have a look on here for the part numbers applicable to your car.
