Engine cutting out while driving
Folks iCould I ask your opinion please. I have had an issue with the mk2 thx carb scirocco. Last two weekends the car has stalled while driving and won't restart. Only common denominator is the car had been running fir a while. It had a slight stall before engine cutout. After sitting fir an hour or so it restarts. Any idea?

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
Check the fuel filler neck for any rusty holes, take the cap off and shine a torch down it.
Could be rust/dirt in the fuel tank blocking the fuel pick up and when the car stops the dirt etc drops of the filter and the fuel is free to flow again.
What does the little plastic fuel filter in the engine look like, any rusty particles in it and how old is it?
Next time it stops undo the fuel pipe going in the plastic fuel filter and blow down the fuel pipe, you can do it with your mouth and you should hear bubbles in the fuel tank. Be very carful of any fuel spills over a hot engine when undoing the fuel pipe to the fuel filter so have a rag handy to catch any dripples of fuel.
What carb do you have, original carb or Webber?

Driving. Was dropping down speed and it hesitated, then cut out. Got it rolled into the side margin then attempted to start. Started on fulll choke then died within a few seconds. Waited an hour and it restarted. Thanks

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
Might also be the rubber carb flange, a bit of rubber th carb sits on, they can split/crack from the heat and let air into the engine, sometimes if the carb moves while driving air gets in and th car cuts out?
When the car is idling try and wobble the carb and if the idle speed changes you may have a split in the flange.

When the car stops do the ignition lights come on in the instruments panel?

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
could also be a failing coil.
when it gets warm the resistance breaks down inside and shorts all over the place.
mine started coughing and sputtering when it got hot last year and i spent ages messing about with the carb untill i ran it when it was dark and i could see it tracking to earth around the king lead.
i changed the coil for as spare which fixed the problem.

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
Does this only happen when you're not accelerating. EG foot off the throttle?

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
Seems to occur after the car has been run for ten mins or so, not specifically on de-acceleration.

Re: Engine cutting out while driving
I've been having this same recurring problem. For me, the issue seems to be fuel contamination. The tank was full of rust and crud that was being sucked through and blocking the filter and filling the vapour separator. I've spent about 700 on having the fuel tank and filler neck replaced, and it's still not fixed! Next, i'm getting a Weber carb. Hopefully that will be the final fix.
Good luck! Start by replacing the cheapest things in this order and see if the issue persists: Fuel filter (>£3), vapour separator (£25), carb mounting flange (£30), carb clean and service (£100+?). After that it could start getting pricey!

James.
Finally got around to changing the ignition coil on your suggestion.
Issue seems sorted - really appreciate your help.
