Scirocco EV

Post by SciroccoEV » Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:31 pm

Back in the early 2000's, I converted a 1984 Scirocco 1.8GTI to battery power. The donor was rescued from under a tree and had a healthy crop of grass growing on the spoiler. At 60,000 miles, it barely ran and consumed nearly as much oil as fuel. The ancient website is now defunct, but I think I still have some of the pictures, I'll think about hosting them somewhere.

It was probably the first 100mph+ capable (road legal) EV in the UK. For various reasons, I sold it in 2006 or so, but recently the opportunity came to buy it back.

It's looking a little sad and in particular, the interior is ruined, but the shell is still very sound. It will get an upgrade to modern batteries.

Uber impressed!! Would love more details to build my own, especially with the price of current road taxes.

There are a lot of kits for rear wheel drive VW's, Beetles, Karmin Ghias but no plug and play for front wheeled drive vehicles.

As I live not far from work, an electric would be brill. What sort of total costs are involved here and what manufacturing skills are needed?

It's been some time, but the Scirocco finally made it into the workshop. There should hopefully be more progress now.

I bought a portable vehicle lift to make things easier.

Good to hear it’s going ahead, interested in how you get on.
I’ve been watching Vintage Voltage on the telly and it seems to becoming a popular mod and I think in the future we may well all be converting our cars to electric :-D

A lot of people have been commenting on the "excessive" cost of the Electric Classic Cars conversions, but they're quite realistic for the cost of components and labor involved. I'm sure those same people would think the cost of restorations is excessive too.

That said, you can do it on a budget if you're prepared to put in the effort tracking down affordable components and acquiring the knowledge of how to use them. Damien Maguire on YouTube is a good starting point.

This will be an interesting build, I shall look forward to keeping up.

I also see you play around with bikes too so I have subscribed to you on Youtube :)
