1986 gt 1.6 restoration / rusy mess

Post by connorj19 »

So ive already got a thread on my 1991 j reg mk2 thats having a 20v turbo fitted- the bonnet came up so bought another car locally to rob the bonmet off etc.

I trailered the old girl back to work, guy said it hadmt hadn't moved for 5 years, brakes wernt stuck thankfully. She had no battery so connected jemper pack , checked oil n water amd give it ago but only spinning. So i grabs the easy start and it jumped imto into live for a seconds , i grabbed a fuel can and connected it to the fuel pipe directly, took a while for it to get into the carb etc but once lines were full it started right off the key. No water leaks which was a bonus. I trested treated her to £20 of fresh fuel and its champion. It gets pulled out of the garage every day as its a bus depot Image

Few snaps after removal of all the screws, they came out rather nice no rounded headsImage so thats what a scirocco lools like eith no body kit haha. So off with the wing, again rather pleased at how easy it comes to bitsImage

Rust free wing fitted, panel gaps aren't the best but I'm a mechanic by trade not a panel beater or painter Image

little bit crusty, but not too bad really. are you going to paint the wing yourself?

Next up was the drivers side door which was fitted with air conditioning system.. aka a nice rusty hole where the handle was Image

For anybody wanting to swap locks is really easy, first off remove the chrome strip from the door handle by prying with a small flat blade screwdriver. That will reveal one screw the other is in the side of the door where it meets the striker pin. Gentely wiggle the handle free.

With the door handle now removed you will see the Y shaped part that moves when you open the handle, remove this and the lock barrel will come out the back.. stupid me never took any photos of that part though haha

A lad I work for does our repair work to our busses, does full panels etc, his finish off the gun is just as good as the standard bus paint job if you get me?

So he's got the task when I find a bonnet

The 20v project has come to a hault, as some expensive parts are now required etc. Thought I'd spend a little money on D511DEF as it's been sat neglected in the workshop with a pool of brake fluid under the rear wheels & a spongy brake pedal. So ive ordered a rear overhaul kit from herritage along with new rear bearings and a pair of front brake hoses & a new rocker gakset. I may drop the full beam and have it blasted... powder coating or black Hammerite?

Also fuel tank could do with replacing, 1986 carb tank is 55 litres? Slow progress but it's been off the road for 5 years so no rush
