'80 Storm from Wales, now across the pond in Maryland

Post by 16v_coupe »

For a Scirocco that started life in Germany, was sent to its assigned market of the UK in 1980. Then in Wales in 2006 this Storm was sold to a US Air Force Airman with plans to have it travel further a field to America. His first thought was to import it to the state of Maine, but when the military made his next assignment northern California it went there instead. While this owner was in California he decided to sell this Scirocco, but there where no takers, so it went with him when he left the military on a move to Massachusetts in 2010. Fast forward to October 2013, I talked to owner who I had met in California back in 2008, about buying this Scirocco make an offer and it is excepted with a condition that it stay where it is at until I can pick it up. Now in November 2014 I finally make arrangements to pick it up and I moved this car to Maryland. Plans are to restore this Storm to driver status and drive it to several car shows in the future.

Some history on this 80 Storm which originally came with Black m L98F now a Brown colour, was shipped to Oakland, California in 2007. I first laid eyes on this Scirocco in Nov. 2008 at the Bonelli A1 gathering in southern California, but had been talking with owner of this Storm before he bought it on line on the VW vortex. We became friends after Nov 2008 and saw each other from time to time in California. This is the 2nd Storm he bought while in the UK, The 1st came from Northern Scotland a short time before this one, it was an 81 in brown L89P where the seats and door panels in this 80 came from, unfortunately the rest of this 81 was too far gone restore/save. I feel fortunate to have bought this Scirocco from a friend and to know most of its history since it left the UK in 2007. This Storm is original, expect for the pop up moon roof (was already installed on it when it was purchased in Wales, 2006), the exterior paint colour and the seats and door panels. The motor is the original EG and I plan be restore it during the restoration of this Storm. I purchased this 80 Storm last Octocter (2013), after it had been moved from California to Massachusetts, but it took a year to arrange pick up of it, I'm glad the previous owner is a friend :vcool:

On to the pictures of this Scirocco, of which some are by my friend and others by me :

The pick up of this Scirocco, I flew from Florida to Manchester, New Hampshire on 4 Nov 2014 where there owner of this Storm picked me up and drove me to his house in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It was good to see my friend again since it had been awhile we last met, I stayed the night at his place and the next morning we got a Uhaul truck and trailer and loaded up the Storm, did this because it does not currently run. Next drove to New Jersey to stay the night at another friends house who has an 80 Scirocco, only stayed there one night. Next day got back on the road with a stop Philadelphia, PA (did not stay there just drove threw it). The next night stop was in Maryland where the Storm is now. Moving this car was uneventful except for the rain all day on Thursday the last leg of the trip.

Great story behind the car and one hell of a journey getting back to base.
Loving the look of English plates in the states. Cool :vcool:

'80 Storm from Wales, now across the pond in Maryland

Post by 16v_coupe »

I bought a few accelerator bushings, since there was not one in this Storm when picked up in Massachusetts last year and the rest will be spares, since the original ones are getting harder to find :dash:

Sold the extra 1981 rear Storm badge that came with this Scirocco to d-bot another mk1 Storm owner that lives here America, in the Seattle, Washington area :vcool:

This Storm is still in storage in Maryland and I will be starting the restoration of this scirocco in June of this year.

Don't know if you have GSF where you are but Mk2 golfs bushes fit and they are in stock and only 96p.

:good: thanks, didn't know GSF price was this good.

now only if doing other things was so easy, like removing the aftermarket pop up glass roof.

thinking of replacing it with a Britax ragtop sunroof :vcool:

I plan restore this Storm like this one, except to make the rag top Tan to match the colour of the dash and the seats in it

Today's fix was to glue a broken part of the drivers front turn with Locite Extreme Repair clear on my spare set of signals that I bought from a Register member of few years ago. These turns were broken while being posted from the UK to Florida :-( :

Image
broken part of lens

Image
broken piece glued to the driver side lens and left to dry for 24 hours. You can see there are other broken pieces that I have glued in the past on this len.

Image
both drivers and passenger lens with the glue. You can see the passenger lens has been repaired also in the past.

This glue will keep the repaired areas of lens together outside in varying weather conditions, I have used this glue on a set mk1 tail light lens in the past with success 8-)

I will be using these front turns on the Storm at car shows, as they are in better condition the ones that are currently on this Scirocco.
Most likely I will use the front turns that came with this Storm while driving it outside the car show environment.

Update worked on this Storm on June 10, while visiting my mate who has it stored in his garage in Maryland (USA)

Drained the gas tank, since the last time it was driven on the road was 2 years ago and found out I need to remove the metal quarter panel behind the driver's door because of rust. I will replace this metal area with this piece from VW Heritage : https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/scirocc ... StartRow=1

Found out one of the previous owners of this Storm welded the front wings both right & left to the body/frame :dash:

Also inventoried the extra parts that came with this Storm :

That is all for now :vcool:

Next time I will work on this Storm will be the middle of August this year. Plan to get this Scirocco running again and drive it around my mates property during my August visit 8-)

An update, I visited this Storm where it is stored and worked on it for a few days earlier this month, June 9-10 8-)
Mostly cleaning more of the interior of this Scirocco. I am also planning on spending a few days working on this Storm in August.
I have realized this Storm has become a long term restoration project since this Scirocco lives 900 miles away from me :dash:

Just finished working on the Storm for the last 3 days at the place where it is stored in Maryland. This time around was more cleaning and organizing of this Scirocco. I start the return drive home to Florida later today and will return to work on this project again the second weekend of October 8-)

I also had a visit from a friend of mine yesterday at the place where the above Storm is, he brought his 1984 Blue Storm with him, "StormRunner" here on the Register, who also lives in Maryland, it was his first time seeing my 1980 Scirocco in person :-D ... Always good to see another Storm owner :vcool:

Well spent last Saturday looking over this Storm with another forum member dingorocco who was on holiday in Maryland from Oz, and we came to the conclusion that the shell of this 80 Storm is too rusty to restore it :dash:

So I am now looking for a good LHD S1 Scirocco shell here in America to move all the bites from this Storm to. When I do this reshell of this car it will be RHD when I finish it :vcool:

That's a shame - but on the bright side you get to buy another Scirocco :-)
