"Gramps" The Gl

Post by Risocco »

LOL.

Made an impulse buy last week, been in a garage for near on 20 years.

Kamei kit fitted from new.

Lots of grubby bits.

But apparently it runs.

No work will happen until March at the soonest, so left on Moms drive for now.

A few parting shots...

Nice...What mileage?

I bought a GL earlier this year which hadn't been on the road for ten years, started in 5...Was running in a couple of hours!

So I fitted a battery and it fired up first time, settled lovely into idle and sounds like new. Blown away.

Struggled for compression for a few seconds on cranking, but she got there. First time its been started in 20 odd years.

I feel I may have bonded with this car already.

Now off to scout the price of a set of BBS mahle. :-D

Blimey - seem to be a lot of GLs popping up lately. I thought they were pretty rare! Looks tidy enough. I hope there's nothing nasty under the body kit. Yours is a later one, I guess, as it's got twin wipers - B/C reg maybe?

Hey Mike,

its on an A reg, registered around march '84 I think? Has brown seats, but not matching door cards and dash. Bit of an odd one in terms of trim. Am looking to get it all matching inside.

The rear arches let the side down, and a few other bits of grot here and there, but the chassis is solid which is what matters, plus I spent very little to get the keys in my hand.

Interesting - so the changeover must be late '83 - presumably for the '84 model year. Is yours cosmos metallic with a blue dash and door cards?

Thanks Bill, will be keeping this fairly standard for now, although the temptation for lowering is strong...

l97a - Diamond Silver, brown seats.

I'd go with '84 being the changeover time, what with the addition of second wiper, washer....

@unknownmale we have the same seats, however yours appear to be a lot cleaner than mine. What year is your car dude?

By 1985 VW had basically stopped fiddling around with the interior design, save for fabric changes and the steering wheel. '83 and '84 cars can be quite a mixed bag of parts bin specials with odd mixtures of trim etc.

It was an 84...Looks like the same car pretty much, minus the kit and the weber of course.

One thing that became apparent upon starting the old girl up was a very severe coolant leak from the rad. I had the GTs old rad, cowling and fan in moms garage so swapped it over yesterday.

Everything is the same size, however the fans are different. The 83 GL had less fan blades and the plug is slightly different to mid/later models. Something to bear in mind.

Anyway, leak free for now and let her run up to temperature...

Thinking an MOT next week for a base of jobs that will need doing.
