Car Tax

Post by RussGLAuto »

Good day gents,

Is it just me, or are y'all getting the same DVLA reminders amounting to £280 for a years road tax? Which, if I pay monthly goes up to £294! :dash:

Yes, I know it's emissions based an our beloved Rocco's are not the cleanest, but really... by gas guzzling dirty 4x4 diesel Audi I got rid a few years ago only cost c.£350...

My better half's 1.5 Mazda only costs £120.

Right, whinge over.

Thanks

Russ

The only logical and sensible way to make it fair would be linking it to mileage by adding it onto fuel prices.

Yes, £280 is a bit steep, especially if you only drive a few hundred miles a year. To save cash, I bring mine in and out of SORN as needed. Did any 1.3 or 1.5 litre Sciroccos make it into the UK? If so, these would qualify for the lower band of £170 a year road tax.

Not long to go RussGLauto till your 1982 car is free road tax… :-D

Just taxed my Mk1 Golf and thought the same as you.. £280.

My wife’s 2015 2.2 turbo Diesel Mazda 6 is only £20 a year road tax.

would make more sense to have road tax at 3p a litre added at the pump
more you use the more tax you pay
if you go through it quicker you will refuel more often ergo pay more tax
irrespective to how much emmisions your car produces that figure is directly linked to mpg and how often you visit the pumps
use more = pay more thats how it should be

true they want to fleece you but they dont allready do what i suggested
VED should be on the fuel not levied on the car itself, then its up to the owner how often they drive the car and the amount of fuel they go through that determines the right amount of tax they pay
at the moment a lot of us are paying £280 for the privilege of doing less than 1000 miles a year

The majority of the cost of fuel is VAT/Fuel Duty.

The more you use the more you pay the government.

The rate of tax is part of the reason my Mk2 Scirocco 1.6 was sold. I now run a Mk1 Golf Cabriolet 1.5 which on April 1st will give me total exemption as I'm already MOT exempt. I now also have a Mk3 1.4 golf so low rate.
