Been here for a while Dave. But thank you for the kind words.

Was hoping to put Gladys into the PC show after the 2020 S**t show that was covid cancelled... that said, been talking to my smart paint repair expert (who's brother may well have originally sold Gladys at VW's Bishop Stortfords branch), I know right, small world!

And he's agreed to attend mid / end March to get Glady's paintwork 100%. Which is what I've been aiming for. Not going to be cheep, c. £700-900 to sort out the bonnet, front valance, and rear swage line rust spiders that have appeared recently...

Seems these can be expected on cars of this age due to poor steelwork prep back in the day when it wasn't really known about.

Hey ho!

I'll get there. Means she's not 100% original paintwork, but it will mean she's 100% rust free which, in my book, is far more important. And the repair will still leave c. 80% paint still original...

Cheers

Russ
Russ,

Not every 30 yr + example can be original, all that matters is they are maintained to help preserve them.
Good luck with the repairs going smoothly…. 👍🏻.

kind regards,

Dave.

Evening gents,

Back home at long last. Quick update on this rolling restoration. Second round of smart paint repairs to banish several small rust spiders from both rear quarters together with a poor rattle can job on the bonnet corner by a previous owner.

What next? Got the rocker cover refurbished and a decent air box replacement from a chap called Dubstock to fit.

Reminds me of my alpine white CL I used to own many moons ago.
Nice tidy example you have there. And good to see the care going in to it to keep it looking it’s best 👍🏻

Thanks gents, I should have done a lot of this on You's Tube but I'm hopeless at video editing... hey ho.

Splashed out on a Quick Jack too so I can get to the oily bits, could do with a good de-grease and jet wash wash underneath.

Just sent off the very poor rocker cover with a slap dash half arsed paint job off to the powder coaters together with the upper cam belt cover and bracketry...

Question; what do we think of these aftermarket oil deflectors? Mine didn't have one, but when refurbishing the air box I noted that there was some oil residue coating the inside. I think they are supposed to reduce the amount of oil mist exiting the rocker cover breather.

Anyone any experience?

The oil deflector was standard on all 1.8 engines and it is shown on the original parts diagram for all 1.5-1.8 engines from 1982, so it should be compatible with your 1.6. Rather than an aftermarket, why not go for genuine? Part number 026103547, item number 363856053288 on ebay for example, or still available new from VW dealers, apparently.
