To laquer or not

Post by alscoob »

Speaking to companies about refurb on my Avus wheels some advise not to laquer the diamond cut faces & other say they would, any thoughts?

The cars not an every day car and generally not used in the winter but I'm looking for the best protection and want the finish to last.
Thanks

IMHO, if you want it to last and not worried about show quality finish, lacquer them.
On the other hand if you want the full on bling then don't lacquer them, but then you will need to polish them fairly often or the corrosion will set in.

Have you decided whether to have a pro job or a DIY ?

If DIY without experience, I personally would not lacquer, you can keep getting them shiner each time you polish them (with Solvol Autosol). You can always lacquer them at a later date. Once lacquered you are stuck with whatever finish you got.

Just out of interest what sort of price are you getting quoted?

I have some white ones which need to be done and would be nice to know how much I need to save..

VW did originally laquer the wheels when they where new.

GCP (chubnut9999) are selling new ones, they do have a couple of colours

Thanks guys, thinking I might get them laquered just to protect them as much as poss & make the cleaning easier!

Prestine quoted £51 +vat if they are laquered & £71 +vat each if polished, they will collect & return.

Wicked wheels just quoted £65+vat each including collection & return, if I send tyres with the wheels they will fit & balance FOC.

Noticed the new ones for sale, pity they are not the anthricite colour :ire: would have saved me a job !

I have emailed him to let me know if he has / can get the anthracite version :)
They are a good price for the genuine article :)

I took that number off Dr Dubs site. Just checked Vagcat and 171 601 025H is for the Avus alloys.
I think 100 euros is not bad for a genuine VW wheel, quality and original.

Can you still get the Avus wheels then? (couldn't find them on Classic parts with either part numbers)

Under Fahrwerk>Felgen

The choice of wheels seems to change.

Guess they make batches.

Well decided to have the wheels laquered in the refurb process and having got them back all I can say is WOW!! they are absolutely amazing :vcool:

They were done by Prestine .. http://www.pristinealloywheels.co.uk/ and the service was superb, they collected the wheels and returned in a week highly recommend these guys... all 4 done for £244.80 all in.

Picture below of before & after.....
