To be or not to be, rear spoiler

Post by C 20 CCO » Fri Aug 20, 2021 7:55 pm

After looking at the pictures of this mk2 for sale on flea bay; is it wise to remove the rear hatch spoiler ??
I thought it was designed to keep the car stable at higher speeds. Or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

Not going to remove mine but just thought I’d share my observations….

Although clearly an aesthetic feature, I am sure VW put in a lot of effort in the wind tunnel to refine the shape of the spoiler to smooth airflow over the rear and bring down the drag coefficient. However, I doubt it's something that would be noticeable in everyday driving. Much less than putting a bag of compost in the boot for example.

Ahhh, after looking at sciroccos for 30 odd years, removing the spoiler only makes it look like something is missing. It’s been made to look incomplete somehow, each to their own I suppose. Cheers for your feedback 👍🏻.

It's a different look for sure. For me, the angular pressings on the tailgate frame and C-pillar spoil the smooth de-spoilered look and reinforce the impression that something is missing.

For me, miles better with the rear spoiler, front fog lights, Pierburg carb and correct size wheels. But much of that is down to personal preference.
