many moons ago i used double sided sticky pads to stick the glass to the frame and as far as i know they are still holding?

From the outside of the a UK DX with the bonnet open and facing toward the car the metering head is most definitely on the right

you can put a washer behind the the hinge which may tighten it up and raise it?
undo a bolt slip the washer in.

Bit too far.
I've got 2 used ones somewhere but no way to test them you could have tried them out if you were nearer.
The one Duggers turned up seems aa decent buy.
