Oil pressure testers are pretty cheap on eBay but a lot of them aren't metric, so you may also need an adaptor. Was the throttle valve wide open when you tested the compression? It could be from the door or damaged/missing membrane, however when my windscreen was leaking, the water went straight to the rear floor area. So worth checking behind the dash for evidence of water leaks too.

I fitted one to a friends Mk1 Golf Cabriolet (with DX injection engine) a few years ago, no issues with clearance on that. The OMP is nice and simple, but I'm looking to purchase the one below for mine in the near future as it is closer in design to the original K bar, so possibly performs better......

It is supposed to be there :) beneath the dirt it is green. The hole would have been used by the dealer back in the day to attach a top dead centre sensor when setting up/tuning the engine.
It can be unscrewed to show the timing marks on the flywheel.

Could the issue actually be on the ignition side - check the vacuum pipes to the distributor, and the free movement of the base plate in the distributor. It could be a delay in the advance of the ignition...
