That sounds very similar to im when first built. Turned out to be the timing and the earth lead on the gearbox mount, stupidly I painted the mount causing a poor earth.

Is there a vw stamp on the doors anywhere ?
Going though some stuff and would like to know if there patterns or original item. Or is there any other marking

Ok I know theres black leather seats of mk1 and 2 but is there such a thing as black cloth seats ?
