New carburettor?
I replaced the original Pierburg carb with a Weber about 15 years ago. I’ve had problems with it ever since. My mechanic says that the flange it sits on keeps deteriorating and allowing too much air in. We replace the flange, it runs ok for a year or two, then starts playing up again. Currently the ...

Re: Replacing coolant flanges
Thank you guys 🙂 I got sidetracked by electrical problems so only came back to this today. The new flanges came with an O ring fitted into the groove. When I removed the old flanges they seemed to have additional sealant on the face of the joint, and around the outside of the flange. I’m not sure wh...

Replacing coolant flanges
I have a couple of leaks in my cooling system and need to replace these two flanges: https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/026121144e-coolant-flange-with-o-ring.html https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/037121132b-coolant-flange-with-o-ring.html Just wondering if anyone’s done this, and where I’m...

Re: Idiots' guide to replacing alternator belt please
Thanks everyone! I’ve had partial success. The teeth on the adjusting nut and on the bar are rounded off. I ordered a new toothed nut. Couldn’t find a replacement bar though. As a result I’m not 100% that it’s tight enough as it’s not holding in the correct position. My torque wrench is the wrong si...

Idiots' guide to replacing alternator belt please
My alternator belt snapped today. I have a spare but can't remember how to replace it - it's been a long time and the Haynes Manual is as unhelpful as ever. I've loosened the top bolt where the toothed adjustment is, but not sure what else I have to undo. Are there more bolts somewhere? I think the ...

Fueling emergency Birmingham
Drove from Brighton to Birmingham yesterday on the first leg of a pre-Christmas tour and broke down twice (M25 and M40) and now wondering what to do as I’m away from home with no tools and no local VW specialist to help me. I have a Weber carb. Before I left the car was stalling if I put the choke i...

Re: E10 fuel in an emergency?
Thanks guys. I haven’t been able to find any super unleaded anywhere so that isn’t an option in the immediate future. I thought if I put in a bit of E10 it would allow me to drive round looking for some E5. I’m on fumes at this point so definitely can’t get to a motorway station. Can’t believe this ...

E10 fuel in an emergency?
My tank’s empty, so no fuel to drive around looking for fuel. Need to get the car to the mechanics a couple of times this week for work on the suspension prior to my MOT retest, plus a few urgent trips. I’m wondering if I can get away with putting in a bit of E10 unleaded as an emergency measure unt...

Cigarette lighter replacement
Just replaced mine and it was a nightmare, so here's what I did. Hopefully this saves you some swearing and despair. I'd already removed the steering wheel, parcel shelf, and under-dash fascia for access to other wiring issues. There is one plug on the back. Undo this. The Haynes manual says you unp...

Re: Instrument panel lights / replacement
Well, it’s fixed. More by luck than judgement I think. To start with I replaced the cigarette lighter, as this needed doing anyway. Strangely, once the cig lighter was in, the rev counter dial lit up again. The dimmer worked on both the cig lighter and the rev counter light. Obviously this meant tha...

Oh wow. This is so helpful, thank you!
I’ll try this out when I get home on Thursday.
Thanks so much.

Re: Instrument panel lights / replacement
Thanks guys.
I was hopeful for a minute it would be an easy fix - just reconnect the cigarette lighter til I made it through the mot. No such luck!
Currently have a mini torch blu-tacked to the dashboard. It looks great.

Re: Instrument panel lights / replacement
Thank you. So the cigarette lighter and the heating controls light haven’t worked for years which means I can’t test them, but you might be on to something. About 12 years ago the circuit containing the cigarette lighter, central locking, stereo etc blew. No one could fix it. Last year I finally tra...

Instrument panel lights / replacement
Hi Did some work on my electrics last year which involved removing the instrument panel. After I put it back in none of the lights on the dials and digital clock work anymore. Not sure what I did wrong. I don't remember being rough with it. Reading other threads suggests that the lights are powered ...
