Are driveshafts interchangeable with CV joints?
OK guys, bit of a hair-pulling evening. In the midst of fitting a replacement gearbox on Rocco and have run into a snag. The muppet that owned the car before me has changed one of the 100mm output flanges on the gearbox with a 90mm one. Now, I have 6 flanges altogether, so I can change these to ...

Re: VW Hose clips !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360362839102 depending on which one you're working on, these are good. i got mine for £15 from the local toolvan, so you should be able to find them cheaper than that ebay link. I'll second that one. I use these all the time and they're fantastic. The only hindrance is ...

Differential bearings
Hi Guys, Looking for a little advice. I have a 1.8 EX which has developed bearing noise from the differential. I believe the gearbox has been changed in its life as the output flanges are smaller than what is expected on the car, and it accelerates a hell of a quick. Anyways, I digress... My ...

Re: Hydraulic tappet replacement without removing the heads?
Thanks mark
I've given her regular oil changes for the last few years. Whenever the oil is changed I put in some wyatts engine flush so I doubt it's that, but it's worth a shot. I'll take a look under the rocker cover as you suggest. Will report back with news.

Hydraulic tappet replacement without removing the heads?
Hi Guys,
Is it possible to replace hydraulic tappets without the removal of the heads. My engine sounds like the typist from hell but I have limited funding just now so would like to get away without having to replace the gasket/bolts if I can.
Anyone got any experience?
Thanks

Re: Converting To Injection
It's not a conversion for the faint hearted though - fuel system / induction system / engine loom all need to be changed. Lots of aggro, and you need to find a decent donor car being broken to get all the bits at a sensible cost. You might be better to buy a running but rusty/crash damaged ...

Re: Breather in air filter, little rubber thing!
Mine fell off about 6 months ago. Haven't noticed any discernible difference so far.
In theory, there may be a bit of emulsification of the oil if there's moisture in the air getting into the engine.
If anybody knows any different please let me know too as I'll need to sort.

Bentley manual is only good if you have a US car. Every time I've tried to use it the information has been incorrect.Chris16vRocco wrote:Haynes manual bad, Bentley manual good.

Yep. 1/2" of play on its longest length. No screeching when all electrical components turned on.

Charging system issues
Hi guys, I'm looking for some input. Recently Rocco's been a bit difficult to start. If I don't catch her within a few seconds she won't start at all. Additionally, when I leave the car for a few days and come back to her, I'm lucky if she'll start at all. Now, I have also noticed that when idling ...

Re: ive just had a 2e built looking to turbo it
Pie in the Sky question here... I know turbocharged engines "can" work on a carb engine (always fancied an MG Montego before they all turned into dust) but how difficult would it be to add a turbo to an engine such as the EX. I know the fuelling would be drastically different, with the fuel curve ...

Re: warm start problems
That pipe vents hot air from the engine back into the top of the rocker cover back into the airbox. Most cars of this age have similar problems with cracking rubber pipes. I would replace it immediately, but then I have driven with it off before (forgot to reconnect after removing the airbox ...

Thanks, my timing is set bang on just now so will advance a bit.
Slight issue. I don't know what pinking sounds like. I've probably heard it but I can't say for sure.

Re: Front brakes binding
Testers have to stamp hard on the brakes during an MOT. If you're a conservative driver they may have pushed the calliper onto a rough part of the calliper slider which is causing them to bind. An overhaul is definitely on the cards. As he said, check the piston but also check the calliper sliders ...
