Re: Struggling with a smoky and burbly 2e2
When I rebuilt a Pierburg 2e2 during lockdown I found the most troublesome part was the 3/4 point unit. I bought several complete carbs to have plenty of parts to choose from and this part failed to hold vacuum on all of them. New units are scarce and very expensive. In the end I did source a ...

Re: Mk2 Coolant Reservoir Part Numbers
Do you have any links or part numbers for such a blanking plug? I was unable to locate a suitable M30 x 2.5mm water-tight threaded plug anywhere. That's why I went for an actual sensor instead. Thanks.

The seal around the lock does deteriorate but is relatively easy to replace and widely available. Part number 161 827 527. For example,

Thanks. Yes, I'm sure you're right.
I agree with your choice of flare tool. It looks very similar to the one I've got, which is this one:

Mk2 Front Brakes - Repair or Replace
So, I think I know the answer to this, but it's quite a lot of work.
Trying to complete a long-overdue flush of the brake fluid in my 1991 GT2 I encountered no difficulty at all with the small, 7mm bleed valves on the rear drum brakes. Moving to the front, neither of the 11mm valves on the front ...

Mk2 Coolant Reservoir Part Numbers
I’m putting this here in case it helps someone else to avoid the slightly embarrassing mistake I made.
For over a year I have been planning to replace the coolant reservoir in my Mk2 GT2 both because it is badly discoloured and because of a mysterious slow leak which causes it to empty if the car ...

Re: Rear wiper, seals etc
There is a good write-up here which might help you fix your rear wiper motor if you haven't been trying to run it jammed too much. Eventually the motor burns out and the fuse blows.

I agree with the above reply. Notwithstanding where VW planned for the car to be lifted 30 years ago you need to make allowance for the fact that there may be hidden corrosion and parts that were strong originally may not be now. The running gear is the same as on a Mk1 Golf, so videos like these ...

Re: HEEELLLLPP
The secret getting Mk2 rear lamps at a reasonable price is to be absolutely clear exactly what you want (including part number) and then be patient. There are multiple variants with different part numbers, Many UK cars had 533 945 111 on the left and 533 945 112A on the right. Here the A indicates ...

Re: Chinese Carburettor
I found the Weber fitted by a previous owner of my 1.8EX to troublesome. I also didn't like the manual choke; although it was quirkily retro it seemed an anachronism on a car made at the pinnacle of carburettor technology. I therefore refurbished a Pierburg 2e2 and have been using it happily since ...

Re: Possible fuel starvation issues with the GTS
I still think your problems are likely to be due to an inlet manifold vacuum leak. If your carb flange is leaking, bearing in mind the actual holes can be very hard to spot, then it will be leaning out the mixture which will itself cause running problems and also cause the engine to run hot thus ...

My experience is more with the later 2e2 carb, but some of the same principles will apply.
Have you checked the state of your fuel filler neck? These deteriorate and allow rust into the fuel tank irrespective of the condition of the actual tank. In severe cases they can develop holes which then ...

Re: Possible fuel starvation issues with the GTS
In the course of getting my GT2 to run reliably I had the tank cleaned out and a new filler neck installed. I subsequently had the fuel sender out myself (hence the photo I added to your other thread) and confirmed that the tank was spotless inside. However, I still occasionally got the effects you ...
