BBS RJ 14”
My 1991 GT2 is currently fitted with rather boring, badly painted 14” snowflake wheels shod with nearly new Pirelli 185/60 R14 tyres. I am using the correct length (23.5mm) radius type wheel bolts which I bought new when I got the car since it came with a mixture of radius and conical bolts. When I ...

Re: Mk 2 Carb Fuel Sender
I bought one from the German seller who originally listed ten available, now down to seven. The quickest way to find the listing is to go to ebay.de and search for 171919051N. I can confirm that the part arrives quickly and well-packaged from Germany. I was keeping an eye open for one after thinking...

Re: Valve Cover Removal
This has been a three year (on and off) project during which I’ve fitted a new filler neck and had the tank professionally cleaned. That was actually about the first thing that was done to try to fix frequent stalling and failure to restart, especially going up hills. I bought the car reasonably che...

Re: Valve Cover Removal
Thank you for all the advice. I have successfully completed this repair now and it was fairly straightforward. I did it in conjunction with replacing a previous owner's Weber "upgrade" with my DIY-refurbished Pierburg. What I hadn't realised was that the top rear part of the timing belt co...

Re: Falling out of love , is my own doing?
I bought my Mk2 as a project three years ago and have just finished it. I think the most important thing is not to spend too much time thinking about all the things that are wrong but instead focus on one fix at a time and take the time to get it right. Yes, there will be times when it is frustratin...

Re: Dash illumination / Ambient lighting
The auto gear selector is illuminated. As is the ashtray, any gauge fitted to the right of the ash tray, the decal above the blower switch and the heater control panel. The switches to the right of the instrument cluster are illuminated. I’m not sure about the headlight switch. If it is then the bul...

Re: Any MK2 Breakers in the UK
When I was after front struts for my Mk2 a couple of years ago I struck lucky as there was one in my local breakers yard with rear end damage. I'm pretty sure I found that via eBay but it might have been via Google search. You have to watch that the latter tends to return ads anything up to 15 years...

Valve Cover Removal
I am planning to replace my valve cover seal as it is leaking above number 4 cylinder. I have got a replacement cork gasket kit and some RTV to seal the corners where the separate plastic parts go. It is obviously necessary to remove the front part of the airbox. I shall be doing this anyway to repl...

Re: Pierburg Manual Auto Differences
My project to restore a Pierburg 2e2 for my 1991 GTII 1.8 Auto is nearing completion. The latest weird problem being that the plastic tube that the pin operated by the waxstat resides in had "shrunk" causing the pin to stick badly. This, it transpired, was due to leaking coolant calcifying...

Re: Connecting new technology to old...
These are the ones I used. The spade connectors were correct for my new speakers but you could always cut then off and solder the wires if you wanted to leave the stock wiring intact.

Re: Fuel tank sender unit ......**FOUND ONE!!!!**
It sounds as though your symptoms are very similar to the ones I’m seeing on my 1.8 GTII Auto with Weber carb. I wondered recently whether I hadn’t restricted the fuel return enough. I used a modified welding tip drilled out to 1mm. My longer-term approach is to restore a Pierburg and get the car ba...

Re: Fuel tank sender unit ......**FOUND ONE!!!!**
I hope that works for you. In my experience, you think you’ve solved the fuel starvation issue and then it comes back to get you when you least expect it. After restricting the return line I used my GT2 1.8 Auto trouble-free for a number of local trips and commuting 25 miles each way all through the...

Re: Fuel tank sender unit ......**FOUND ONE!!!!**
I have done all the things you describe - had the tank cleaned, fuel filler neck replaced, restricted the fuel return at the vapour separator. However, I have discovered that mine still splutters when the tank gets down to about half full. I’m working on restoring a Pierburg to replace my Weber carb...

Re: Fuel tank sender unit ......**FOUND ONE!!!!**
When I removed mine I used a pair of water pump pliers on end, adjusted to engage in opposite slots thus evening out the force on the thing. I think the German words Auf / Zu here mean open / closed. It has to turn anti-clockwise to release it. I wonder if sometimes people get confused and try to tu...

Re: Fuel.sender unit Carb
It should be VDO part number 533919051. That was the original part number in my 92 GT2. However, these are not currently readily available new. I thought mine was faulty because of fuel issues when the tank gets below half full. However, I think in fact my problems are to do with a temperamental (We...
