Bit of a weird one. The car will start and drive fine for the first time of the day, and if you turn it off for a short time like a few mins it will start and run fine again. I've done one of mine, the studs were easy to get out. Some came out when undoing the nuts, others needed a slight persuasion with a pair of pliers. Think the oil in the cork gasket stops them from seizing up. However, the rubber one is far better than the cork one.

My mk1 also has the top fill radiator, but has the bracket for the expansion tank on the suspension turret. Ideally I want to change it to the expansion tank setup also as that's what it should be, and its a lot easier to keep an eye on the level every time you open the bonnet. Do you have a parts ...

PS. How much coolant do these take? Someone has converted mine to an earlier style radiator that you fill from the top rather than the one with the expansion tank like later cars should have. I would like to change this back as being able to monitor the level from the tank is so much easier as well ...
