Re: 2 questions - engine rebuilding

Just skim-read your project thread. If you're still looking for an ABF, I've got a spare one of those too. I just need to take the head off and check if the bores are any good.

Re: 2 questions - engine rebuilding

It really depends on the individual engine. A 200k miler could be fine, or a 60k miler could be wrecked. If you're prepared to pay someone to build an engine for you, you could try Ian Carvell maybe? Or David Knight if you want someone to do all the machining as well as build it up. Or you could jus...

Re: "Easiest" Engine Swap Out

What are you aiming to get out of this? Will it be a road car or a track toy, or a bit of both? What's your budget, and your level of mechanical knowledge? What age are you - insuring modified cars is expensive if you're young. - a 2.0 or 1.8 8v with head work and a 270 ish cam would be a good daily...

Re: Cylinder Head Developments

I had a look at his website - the work looks pretty good, and I like the reassuring pictures of a middle aged bloke in overalls! If anyone further east is looking to get head work done, I know and use the guy who did all the GTI Engineering heads, and supplies, TSR, C&R, Stealth, and many more. ...

Re: kr exhaust manifold

Stud pattern and gasket are different, as already said, so you need the hens teeth Scirocco one, a tubular conversion job, or make two downpipes into one (1x Mk2, 1xMk1). There's a Mk2 16v Downpipe on the Mk2 golf I broke. The resonator box is starting to go, but the flange and upper end are good. Y...

Re: Best bearings for a 9a build ?

Whatever you do, DON'T use the Kolbenschmidt main bearings with the built-in thrust washers. They're engine killers. If it was me, I'd phone up some reputable engine builders and find out what they use - maybe buy from them. David Knight Engine Services could be worth a call, or maybe you've got one...

Forest Green :hehe:

They appear to have some sort of acid rain problem there. Is there a power station next door?

Re: CUSTOM GRILL vs ORIGINAL GRILL

this was done to remove the inner lights and get more airflow into the engine bay. It also saves about a kilo :yup: - £10 worth of ally expamet, a bit of paint, and a bit of paper printed off the internet, and cut out for a stencil... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v512/mikehorsb/Rocco/IMG_0200.j...

Re: Which cylinder heads fit?

^^ As Brunty says^^ it's a low compression engine. The head volumes are all about the same IIRC, but if you're tuning for performance you're better of starting with the 1800 or 2.0 block, or at the very least, heavily skimming the block or head (1.5 - 2mm in total, depending on your cam choice). I r...

Re: Fancy contributing to the club magazine?

In the next few weeks & months, I'll be having a cage fitted (by Ian Carvell), work done on the suspension, and doing a megasquirt conversion. I'd be happy to do you a write up. I was going to write up a proper project thread on the forum, but even when I resized my pictures on photobucket, I st...

Re: Which cylinder heads fit?

No worries - there might be more (I'm not sure on the engine code for an 1800 carb Scirocco, for example). Those should be the common golf ones though.

Lube the cable with some spray grease. Your clutch should get a lot lighter with a new cable anyway.

Re: KR cylinder head compatibilty?

It's a quick way to a forced induction engine (lowers the compression to about 8.5:1 I think. I think you need to get the pistons machined too.

Waste of time for a naturally aspirated lump.

Re: Injection Fuel Pumps..Do they prime before starting?

It depends which relay you've got. My 89 and 92 scalas didn't prime when I got them, but now that I've got a Mk1 golf relay in the '89 car (no rev limiter) it primes. It was a GSF relay, incidentally. Given that almost all of these cars will have had their fuel pump relay replaced at some point, I'm...
