Only 150 Left?

I read (I think on edition or cgti, not sure now!) that there are only 150ish Mk1 Sciroccos left in the UK, but no-one seemed to be able to back this figure up.

Anyone know whether this is right? I know you hardly ever see any others around, but that still seems a bit low to me?

saw that - one of the classic car mags doing a buyers guide this month so that may be where it was lifted from.

figure has been speculated on before - difficult to confirm given DVLA quote hundreds of £ to respond to such requests.

i'd 'reckon' on more like anything between 200-400 with a lot off the road clearly.

I think now theres less than 300 with more of them off the road than on it?? :yup: Classic Cars mag also said the first sciroccos in the UK was 1975 not '74. They didnt reach the States until '75, I think thats where this came from.

Did not realise the Doovla charged a lot for these requests. I realise clubs are able to ask about these things but apparently us mere mortals are not able to. How hard can it be in this day and age to press a button. Would be interesting to see how many was taxed and how many were sorned.

I would have thought those numbers sound a little more realistic. Still not many though! :crying:

In an article on the BBC news site today,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8456116.stm
they gave a link to an excel spreadsheet with MOT figures, including 58 MK1 Sciroccos (74 - 81) passing their MOTs in 2007
A lot less than 150 :(

Checkout the spread sheet, maybe I interpreted it wrong.

Agree that there were 58 passes for mk1's which passed in the "year of first use" 74 - 81 but I dont understand why there are so many post 85? Surely all the cars were, sold, registered and MOT'd by then?

I'm thinking its possible some of the Mk2 data was put into the Mk1 category accidentally for the years 85 - 2003 (bar the odd cars here and there).. any thoughts?

It looks to me like there are plenty of innacuracies in there anyway (including a pair of '74 corrados having been tested apparently!) so I wouldnt take too much heed of teh numbers on there.

To compound any problems with the actual data, the spreadsheet version has been prepared by the BBC themselves, as the DVLA were effectively pressganged into releasing the data against their will, so would only release as a less than useful pdf. I wouldnt be surprised if even more innacuracies have crept in as the BBC transferred the data to the spreadsheet (havent seen the original pdf to compare)

yes, I also believe that the information in the spreadsheet is subject to larger than satisfactory errors. I'm not holding it up as anything authoratative about numbers, just an interesting, though clearly flawed, source of information.
The increasing degree of integrated information systems at the dept of transport should improve the quality of the gathering of source material in future years.
One day it may be more useful than this is at present.

The PDF is actually easier to read than the Spreadsheet but obviously has the flaw that you cant do anything further with the data.

The data itself for the mk1 looks to be consistent.

Although I agree with you both regarding the discrepancies and the validity of the data, it is still nice to see something rather than nothing. It gives us a ball park at least to go by..

It would be nice to know how many of the test passes were after a failure(/s) first around to get a better number on how many remain (both mk1 and mk2).

58 mk1s tested in '07? sounds like a reasonable figure to me, obviously there will be 3 times that number on sorn.

anyone know a Definite price for the info from DVLA?

are the results listed as test fails the number of cars that were failed, the number of tests that were failed (it's possible for a car to fail more than once before it passes) or the number of cars that failed and then did not subsequently pass?

hi all,

a couple of years ago i contacted the dvla they now have farmed out this sort of data to pvt companies.
one company quoted me £250 for nationwide numbers and £500 by county.obviously i politely declined.
