1991 Scirocco GT2 16v project

Post by millsy20 »

I have been meaning to start a thread about this for a while.

This is my first Scirocco that I brought back in april 2007 for the sum of £410 off of Ebay. It was run for a while as my daily driver during my second year at university. Then at the end of my second year I decided to save some money and stop running it which didnt go too well because I then decided to start a project with the car. I bought a mk2 golf 16v as a donor car for this for £300 off of Ebay. The engine had covered 111,000 miles so I thought it was a good engine for the conversion.

So to some pictures:

Then the next stage was to get the engine out of the Mk2 Golf and change the cambelt and head gasket. This was done as a precaution just incase the cambelt snapped and need a head rebuild.

Heres a quick picture of the car that donated its heart for mine.

The shell was rusty around the rear lights and the plenum chamber.

This is the engine during the head gasket replacement and cambelt change. It is now back together and in the shell.

So onto the present. It has taken 1 year and 4 months to get to this stage. Not too bad considering I have only been able to work on the car for three weeks at a time during my last year at university. During this time the engine has been put into the car. The car has fallen off the axle stands at the back and onto the fuel tank so I have need to remove the tank to inspect the damage. The only damage to the tank was a dent. During this time I decided to refurbish the rear beam and clean up the arches. These were perfect with no rot anywhere. Once cleaned up they looked like the car had just rolled off the production line. When I refitted the tank and rear beam all the nuts and bolts were replaced with high tensile items as well as new outer arb clamps and arb bushes as well as TA Technix coilover brought off ebay for £160.

Here are some pictures of how she looks at the moment:

Heres a checklist of things that I plan on doing to the car over the next few months

New Exhaust
Renew the fuel system (Pump, swirl pot and unions brought from Rally Design and due to be arriving over the next few days)
Get the dash refitted
relocate the battery and get rid of the battery tray
remove the front foglights

Plans that may be in the pipework

Twin Weber 45s
Glass Fibre panels
Remove heater and source and fit heated windscreen
Lexan windows all round
rollcage
bucket seats and harnesses

I am hoping to go back to the Nurburgring around Easter so Im planning for it to be back on the road for then.

Ive used the complete engine and lighting loom as well as the dash loom and Golf fusebox. This was so I didnt have to much about with Relays and stuff. I found out where the fuel pump wiring goes into the plug for the rear loom and took the pin out and refitted it into the rear loom plug and then im just earthing the pumps to the bodywork in to boot. I left the rear loom in because I the golfs loom was a mess and I couldnt be bothered with rewiring the back of the car.

Not too many problems really mate just a bit of shortening of the loom and extension of some of the wires. Ill get some pics up when I can take some good photos.

Its not too bad as long as your mechanically minded its fairly easy. Its just the loom that worries me because im not that good with electronics.
This is the first car I have ever done any serious mods to.

Quick update.

I got my Swirl pot, fuel pump and unions for it the other day.

Image

Its a 1litre swirl pot and a facet red top competion interupter pump.

I have also got a set of weber 40s coming this week brought for the pricely sum of £150 off of a guy on retro rides. I just need to buy the inlet manifold and get the carbs overhauled at Northampton Motorsport and they will be ready to go on the car.
