Removing battery tray

I want to remove the battery tray on the passenger side chassis leg as I'm relocating the battery to inside the car.

Anyone removed theirs before? Any pics?

I think its a 'be brave' and get the angle grinder out kind of job. From looking at it, it doesn't appear it will affect any strength in the car?

Never done this myself. Would it be easier to drill out the spot welds?

Deffinately reccomend drilling the spot welds out! Drill them out, then get a decent chisel to lift it as you go.

Grinding will take HOURS and leave a gash finish if you slip or something.

I'd say drill the spot welds too... I want to do this eventually, i think it'd look smart!

I drilled out my rear parcel shelf supports,you can buy a special spot weld remover tool,or just use a big drill bit,metal is very thin,and i went through it in most of the ones i drilled,filled now,just waiting to oput finishing touches to it,then paint.

clean it up and you should see the spot welds easy enuf. centre punch them then drill them out and you shouldn't need a chisel.

ok, took it out today for anyone interested....

The battery tray is black as I had previously hammerited it due to the battery leaking and corroding the tray. I was never happy with it and wanted to relocate the battery to inside the car so here is the tray as it was...

A couple of snapped drill bits, some chisel, angle grinder and hammer action later....

Definately looks better without it....

Looking good Stu, do we have a plan for when its on the road? would be good to see 2010 with a new host of rebuit rocco's

Aiming for Roadstar but we'll see.... Pretty sure it will be next year and Roadstar is as good a target as any but it depends on a few factors, namely time!
