'86 1.6gt exhaust?

Post by wjtn »

I'm trying to replace all three sections of my '86 1.6gt and am struggling to find a part that a supplier definitively says will be right.
This rear section looks and seems right, my engine is a EW code and I can't see how the chassis would have changed? Am I thinking about this too much? -

As for the downpipe and center section it's a similar story, anyone I contact says they can't get what I need, surely it can't be that exotic it's a pretty basic model! Am I right in thinking the systems are similar to the MK1 cabby's?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Just a thought… I guess you have the space save spare wheel?

Is your exhaust like the one in the picture with the long bit of pipe before the rear silencer and the join just below the back seat?

Is the last part of your VIN number higher than 53ZFK022074? Does your car have the body kit?

No the last part is lower than that and the begining is 53ZGK not FK if that makes any difference and yes it does have a slightly thinner spare so probably yes it has the space saver.

Ok, G is 1986 model year. For EW engines after VIN code 53ZFK022074 (part way through 85 model year), the exhaust part numbers are:

Front: 171253091E - assuming you have the original exhaust manifold
Centre: 533253209D
Rear: 533253609AR (for cars fitted with body kit)

BUT, the photo of the rear section on the VW Classic Parts website (short, joins behind the axle) doesn't match the parts diagram (long, joins in front of the rear axle). I suspect the photo on the website, which is replicated on other sites, is wrong, as the length is stated as 1640 mm, but tread with caution.

Thankyou for this, the original part numbers are very useful.
I've read that the floor slightly changed in 84 and the spare downgraded to a space saver and the addition of the bodykit, did it change that much?
As far as I can see the Ew code engine came in 84 and didn't change in 86?
Has anyone tried the earlier type? The earlier type of exhaust is so much easier to get hold of and half the price!
Did it change so drastically that the older type won't fit at all? Or is it just a difference in hanger positioning? Thoughts?

Yes, the EW engine came before 1985, as did the space saver spare, but there was also a change to the rear exhaust mid-1985 model year. Up to VIN 53ZFK022074, the rear exhaust for the EW engine is shown as part number 533253609H, with the front and middle sections unchanged. I suspect the only change mid-85 was to the shape of the tail pipe, to account for the body kit added for 1986.
