NOT MINE - 1978 Mk1 GLS 51k Miles, £1500 ono - Project

Post by MikeH »

Location: Near Newport Pagnell
MOT & tax- No
V5 - Old style one with the car
Price - £1500 ono, and I think the seller is open to close offers.
Contact Details - PM me for the seller's number, or see the rocco register Facebook page.

I went to see this tonight and very nearly bought it, but I have too many projects on the go already. I have no connection to the seller, and I have no financial interest in the sale of this car. I think it's a good project for someone with bodywork skills, or pay Ant to do the body and put it back together yourself. It'll be a great car when it's done.

It's a 1 owner GLS on a T Plate with 51k miles on the clock. Brasil Brown Metallic.

The car is sat on later alloys, but the originals come with it. As with any Mk1 project it needs welding, and after welding it needs paint. A lot of the repair panels and 2 spare doors come with the car.

Parts with the car
- O/S sill
- Rear Lower Valance and corners
- Rear arch repair panels
- 2 solid doors in the right colour, but with a couple of minor dents.
- Original Alloys.

It's not run since 2003, but looks to be pretty much complete. We turned the engine over on a jump pack tonight. I don't think the engine will be a problem to get running.

What did I see that needs welded
Top rail of N/S inner wing, and a bit more on the O/S, plus the bottom front corners of the inner wings.
O/S sill and rear arch.
Rear lower valance
O/S scuttle panel
Maybe a little bit in the front corners of the floor
Needs a filler neck too.

In general it's well worth saving for a Mk1, and would be a valuable car once done well, due to the low owners and miles.
Most of the bits you'll need are there, but you'll need the top rails for the inner wings, maybe floor corners, and I can't remember if there's a scuttle repair panel included.

The seller is a VW specialist who took the car in exchange for a bill and wanted to keep it, but doesn't have time to work on it, as he's very busy with customer cars.

Overall it's a good project to do and keep. You could do the MOT welding, paint the bottom half and be done with it, but I think it would be worth doing a proper resto on the car, to a good standard, and with a full respray. This should see it right for many years to come. It'll be tax exempt in 3 or 4 years too.

Interior is very very good.

Pass inner wing is rusty just at the top I think.

Driver's inner wing needs more work. I'd chop out the old repair and do it properly, with the wing off.

Image

Scuttle panel needs a repair. Screen should pass an MOT - the little bit of delamination is the only issue I noticed.
Image

Driver's rear arch and sill need work. I didn't see any holes in the rear axle mounts.

Boot floor is good, with a slight dent in it, but there's no sign of accident damage to the rear panel. I think this is from something heavy being dumped in the boot. Spare wheel well looks OK too - very unusual for one of these.

Pass side rear arch is pretty good.
