My £66 Charity Case GT - 128bhp Homebrew

Post by Risocco »

So, around Feburary 2007 I decided I needed a project car to learn basic motor mechanics on. Clapped eyes on this wee beauty that was destined for the scrapper should nobody bid and rescue her, so had to do the decent thing really...

Image

Thats the only pic I have of the old girl before I decided to "improve" and "repair" the now 23 year old car, taken from the :ebay: advert

Car arrived two weeks after the end of auction due to epic snow fall affecting delivery times. Initial reports were good, no rot, bits of surface rust and some rather fetching rusted 14inch steelies running 70 profile tyres. Nice.

So, next was to make a list of all the old girls problems. My friend and I diagnosed a fubar'd clutch, throttle cable, head gasket, clutch cable, front brakes, a damn good service, timing belt and pretty much all gaskets.

So, the main problem was takled first. Off with her head!

Image

During this time, I replaced all hose clips with fancy new ones, got some replacement engine bay stickers and spent two days thoroughly cleaning and de-greesing the bay. Also got a shiny surround for the coil and as you can see made myself an upper strut brace.

Also painted my fluid bottles to help tidy up the bay...

Image

And onto the head rebuild...

Image

Image

Finally back on the engine...

Image

Decided to tart up other bits too while I had the paint cans out, after a quick brush with nitromors...

Image

And finished...

Next, was to tackle the look of the motor. Again got the paints out to mod my rear lights. Just two coats of apint and plenty of laqure created this effect...

Image

Image

After, the b-pillar vynal was next to bite the dust...

Image

Then, a friend got busy with the fibreglass and made me a de-badged grillie. Then painted it jade green to match the car...

Image

Here it is fitted, along with volks-bits spoiler and new numberplates...

Ok, back to the oily bits and I began to repair the brakes. First off were the fronts, as they were...

Image

And all new parts and a lick'o paint...

Image

and the rear, before and after...

Image

Image

Did all that work, new pads, discs, shoes and fluid, took it for a spin down my road and no improvement. Ahh, Scirocco brakes really are that bad out the box then... :dash:

And back we go to the visuals of the car, the original interior had turned purple in the sun and was ripped to shreads so sourced the most common seats to be original, obviously...

Image

And got me a leather handbrake gaitor from a Lotus :mafia:

Image

Finally, interior wise, made a little centre piece for the centre console, as it were...

Image

Around a month into having the car on the road, it wouldn't run too good, and idling esp. Took the breather away from the rocker and it was shooting oil straight back into the carb via the air-box. As an excuse to spend money, got a splash guard for under the rocker and one of these...

Image

Note the broken hose to the rad, the first of many with this car for some reason. Anyways, carb'd guys get a catch tank if you dont already, totally worth it

Spring of last year was an excuse to finally change the dash, which as most know is a weak point on these cars.

After a few hours, I was left with this...

Image

The old dash, epic crack content... :chortle:

Image

And after a few more hours, replacement in...

Image

Not too abd a job really looking back, just a pain to locate all the screws, check your glovebox if your gonna attempt it :dash:

Next change to the look of the car was lowering thanks to Jonny Rocco, a car-bra, black pressed plates and a lower spoiler, which I believe has been on 3/4 register cars over the years...

Image

Image

No problems with the law so far with these plates if anybody is curious. Personally, I think these plates are the best mod for a Sciroccos rear

Next on the agenda was new shoes, a home made grillie and spoiler combo and after much searching, GTI headlights...

Needed to fit coilies to cure a wee bit of rubbing, so off I go to a mates Garage for use of air tools...

And fitted...

Image

Still rubs a little on hard cornering, may have something to do with an ET of 7 up front...

A few more bits of fun in the shape off some check effect sun visors...

Image

A rear strut brace (highly recomended, mmore use than a front upper) boot tidy bag for emergency tools/bodging materials and some rear strut cover things...

Image

Porsche Steering Wheel...

Image

And deleted the manky aerial...

Decided I needed more power in my life, so had an injection head P&P'd, injection camshaft, P&P'd Inlet Manifold, shaved the Hedgehog, Jetex filter in the standard air-box, cold air feed direct from grillie and a full exhaust system

Makin' a mess, my neighbours love me...

Image

Head almost built up and ready to go in...

Image

Shiney new zorst...

Image

Image

Estimate around 110BHP from a 1.6, awaiting delivery of a more aggressive Kent cam to push figures higher.

Back to the old school....................

Remembering a conversation I had with Bill, he much prefers the standard lights where as I was desperate to get some GTI lights. As soon as I fitted them I started to prefer the standard ones again. Moral of the story, Bill knows best....

Image

Nicely waxed ready for the winter and the joys of carb icing :ire:
