dsg has been fitted to a number of golf mk1's so definitely possible, should be build threads about for it.
i believe the 1.4 engine had loads of issues with oil use, why not go full hog and stick a 2.0 tfsi engine in, woud def fit and would have potential for greater power.

Thanks - yeh, that would be a very nice option indeed - see what I can find

I'm feeling the urge for something a bit more hairy - even looking at R32s now!

There is an r32 rocco about, i think the weight distribution of the vr6's can be detrimental to handling as the weight is slightly further forward, not driven one myself though.

Theres loads of options, basically any 4 pot vw engine will bolt in without too many mods. vr6, v5, honda k20 engine swaps have been done.

work out what you want power wise, if you want a turbo or supercharger and what your going to use the car for. then youll be able to narrow engine choice down. for example if you want a B road blaster you'd probably be best off with 150bhp normally aspirated engine.

Yeh that’s sound advice Tom - I only want a bit more poke than the c.90 I have currently with a more modern auto but it’s not a deal breaker - 150 would be more than enough

an abf conversion might be best for you then if you can find a good one in decent condition.
