What's the thinking on red coolant in the 1.8 inj. engine?

Some people do it, although some reds aren't compatible.

I use Comma XStream G48 green, tried & tested favorite, zero risk

To swap to that is it necessary to completely get rid of other antifreeze in the system, red or blue?

Red, probably

Blue, probably not, but a flush through is always a good idea anyway if refreshing

I haven't seen official VW advice, but this site is very informative:

https://www.wolflubes.com/EN_EU/Blog/20 ... olant.aspx

Current VW G13 coolant and the previous G12++ coolant are both supposedly mixable with earlier coolants, but apparently produce a horrible brown colour when mixed with G10/G11, so it's best to flush through thoroughly first.

I've had G13 diluted with distilled water in my GT II for over a year, and so far no issues.
