Re: Engine rebuild and stuff
Don't rebuild it unless it's actually necessary. Expensive to do if done correctly. I'd advise leaving the engine alone if it's running without issue.
That being said, if you're restoring 100% of the car and have the budget then go for it.
I found everything very easily available from multiple vendors. Piston rings are not as available as the rest, but bearings, bolts, gaskets, seals, guides, lifters etc can be found very easily using part numbers.

Re: Engine rebuild and stuff
If the engine has done less than 200,000 miles and has been looked after with regular oil changes etc then I would leave the bottom end alone.
I would how ever remove the head and have a look inside, you can then check the bores for wear etc, I would then change the valve stem seals as they go hard over time and that is why you get blue smoke from the engine. While the head is off you can then check for wear on the valve guides, check valves and seats etc.
I took my stripped head to an engine specialist and got them to double check it and the valves then clean the head, they have a big dish washer to get it all nice a clean and was quoted £20 for a good clean. They did advice I had the head skimmed after checking so I did that and all in was about £120
You should be able to clean up/ paint most parts instead of buying new stuff as the VW stuff does last a long time and some of the after market stuff is not that good.
I follow the old rule..... if it ain't broke don't fix it...
If you look at my Mk1 golf thread then you can see the engine after I've cleaned it, the gearbox was painted silver badly which I had to wire wheel/brush off as it was flaking paint every where. Why paint a silver aluminium gearbox silver!
The engine block was cleaned and painted with engine paint.
Hopefully the pictures work?

Re: Engine rebuild and stuff
I had the 1.8T completely rebuilt. It's like better than new now.
The total cost for parts, including even the last nut and bolt, was 670€.
