Minor coolant leak

Post by GTXGTXGTX »

Car running great after head gasket replacement. Have also done can shaft oil seal. Final problem is a leak around one of the exhaust manifold nuts. I have tightened it but still leaking. Does it just need a new nut and washer? I assume its a special nut? Or could I just replace with a normal nut? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

It's a special type of nut, I usually fit news ones when taking the manifold off as they are a locking type.

Looks like this.

Cheers Mark. Have ordered some. Hoping a new nut will solve the leak.

Regarding the above, is it normal for a leak coming from one of the exhaust manifold bolts? It's very minor.
Thanks

Get about 1m of garden hose, start the car and stick 1 end of the hose in your ear and move the other end around the manifold and you should hear where the leak is, don't touch the manifold with the hose when it's hot as it will melt it!

Usual place for leaks is the manifold to down pipe if you have the C clips as I always found it a nightmare to seal that joint.

Thanks Mark.
What do you think about the coolant leaking from the manifold stud / nut?

Cheers

Sorry I was getting the wrong end of the stick... Helps if I read the title of the thread....

If fuel injection there should be no coolant around the manifold, If carb there is a rubber O ring joining the inlet manifold water channel to the head and that can leak, the rubber goes hard over time and being heated and cooled.

Pictures.

Did you fit new gaskets when fitting the manifold?
Does the drip dry up when engine is hot as it could just be a drip of oil?

Any grease on the nut or stud and it melted?

Hi Mark, you were right, a drip of oil. The actual leak appears to come from the rocker cover gasket, it's rubber and was fine until I took it off when taking the head off. New one ordered.

Thanks

They are a nightmare to seal up again, the amount of leaks I've had over the years from rocker cover gaskets..... :dash:

Glad it's nothing serious so enjoy the car in this great weather, My Mk1 is enjoying the runs out.
