Mk2 wanted

Postby Howard792 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 8:27 am

Hi

Having spent 2 years restoring a Triumph Spitfire and with my modern car going back to Toyota, I am in the market for a really good Scirocco for occasional use.

I'm based in Somerset and able to drive 100 miles to view.

My budget is up to £3,500 but I am more comfortable at £3k

Ideally the car would have the following:
1. Full service history
2. Less than 100k on the clock
3. Not previously resprayed unless genuinely really good (No overspray no orange peel no painted over rubbers or masking lines)
4. Ideally red, blue or green. Not so taken on the greys but I'm open minded. Condition more important
5. Manual
6. Low previous ownership
7. No previous MOT fails for corrosion.
8. A willingness to send high res photos.

Feel free to get in touch if you have such a car or any advice as to what model i should look for. I'd prefer the faster variants.

Many thanks

Howard

Might be more than 100 miles, but I would imagine this will be what you're looking for.

You don't say whether you want fuel injection or carb (or if you're not bothered) but in my experience (well into double-figures of mk2 ownership) the fuel injected ones are a better drive and less bother.

(EDIT: actually you don't say whether you want a mk1 or mk2... although at £3.5k you're unlikely to find a mk1 meeting your requirements).

Thanks very much. Yes I saw that one and thought it looked good; it's just quite far. If it was red or green or blue (my preferred colours) I'd make the trip. It looks like what I'm after otherwise.

Yes definitely fuel injection unless the condition is so good it's worth the compromise. And mk2 for me too.

I did see this one but it seems way too much does it not?

Plus I'm not keen to buy from a dealer; just an enthusiast.

There's this one too but it's an auto and I don't know whether they make an underwhelming drive

They both look like good cars, you'll always pay more from a dealer but that GTII probably isn't wildly over-priced actually. Privately I'd expect to pay around £3000-£3500 if it's as good as it seems.

Autos are ok to drive but it really depends on how you intend to use it whether it will suit you.

I'd still recommend going for that GTX of those three. It is blue, by the way...

GTX is the one I would go far as well, manual gearbox and fuel injection which will give you good MPG and plenty of performance. I use my Mk1 Golf Gti with the DX engine (same as the GTX) as a daily and regularly get 40 mpg.
You do need to run them on Super unleaded to get the best out of the engine.

Thanks both

Is a GT like the red one fuel injected? Presumably they phased carb variants out by 1990?

No, the GTII is carb (the dealer has listed it as a GT, but it is definitely a GTII).

Injection models were killed off when the Corrado came out (I think 1991 is the last fuel-injected production year in the UK) but the carb soldiered on until the end of production in 1992.

Almost all the info you could ever want on Sciroccos, you will find at Dr Dub's excellent site: http://website.lineone.net/~dr.dub/

But essentially injected models are:

1982-84 GTI ('82 1.6, '83 on 1.8)
1984 Storm
1985-1988 GTX
1989-1991 Scala

Carb models - everything else (all autos are carb).
