The only guaranteed way to get the right part is to start with the VW part number. VW have a parts system called ETKA. This used to be readily available "unofficially" on ebay but VW have made it harder and harder to obtain/load on your own computer. Various websites have popped over the years with this catalogue available online. The current one is :
but this has started some intrusive advertising of late so I don't know how long it will be around.
For aftermarket parts brands like Hella, Bosch, Febi, Sachs etc the magic word is "ecat", short for e-catalogue. Type in any manufacturer followed by ecat and you will enter a magical realm of quality parts availability. Once you armed with the manufacturers part number you can search that and find the best price.
