More 6x4 speaker options

Post by the edmundator »

Like a few people, I like the idea of keeping things close to OEM and thought I would try Blaupunkt 6x4 speakers from http://www.bluespot.co.uk.

I've tried THX 462 speakers to start with. The sound quality is excellent for a 6x4 speaker, I think better than the JBLs people commonly use (although I haven't compared them side-by-side). The only problem with these is they won't fit behind the speaker covers at the front, because the tweeter protrudes too far. They cost £39.99/pair inc. P&P. http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr1_5.asp

So then I've bought a pair of the next model down, the GTX 462. There's not a huge amount of difference between the specs, and probably wouldn't be noticeable unless you're using a serious amp-driven ICE set-up. These fit nicely behind the front speaker covers and still sound great. Slightly cheaper at £32.99/pair inc. P&P. http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr3_1.asp

You can also get a bog standard speaker (IC 109), which is probably about as good as the original VW-installed speakers - fine if you just need to replace disintegrating old speakers like mine were. £29.99/pair inc. P&P. http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr5_4.asp

aha! I was just wondering about replacing my speakers........

So in my Mk2 - there's 6x9's in the doors? What's in the rear?

I'm looking to replace mine with something a little bit better than the factory installed ones, but am not looking to cut holes in my car!!

Kenwood and Pioneer do custom fit speakers 6x4's, they are 150 watt and about £40-£50.
Good thing is they fit behind the door grills and back grills with no problems.

ive found a nice litle trick of fitting the speagers behind the door card mounts. you have to take the door card off to do it but then u can get away with bicker tweeters in the cones.

Where did you get those, Ian? I want some! Then I'd have a 100% Alpine install.

I got the 6x4's from a Car Audio shop in Bishops Stortford, but I'm certain you can go to any decent Audio place and get them £45 a pair, sound fantastic with the Alpine head unit I have as well.

I'm about to put 4 of these in mine, looking at the specs, they should be quite good for budget speakers.

Had previously been using these, but blew one and fancy trying some 4-ways.
