VW Scirocco 1.8 GTI Mars Red 1984

Post by vwbodie »

So I have just purchased my rocco to take pride of place next to my 91 cab sportline... The car has been dry stored for the last 10 years, done 190000 miles, I am the third keeper, all there and really really really solid.... Not sure what to do with it. Will be back on the rd next summer in some form, just not sure what. Its seized, so don't know whether to re-built the DX lump or do something else with it. Tempted just to rebuild it and chuck a set of Ronal turbos on it. Or just keep it bog standard and drive it.... ideas ideas :| :|

Welcome vwbodie, another member on here with a Mk1 Golf cabriolet...

To upload pictures either use a app on your phone, tapatalk or if you open up the full editor and press the attachment tab underneath the bit were you write you can upload the pictures.

I think you can use flicker as well but I’ve not tried that....

No worries, Looks like a project for you over the winter.. There can't be many 84 Gti's left now?

Al least it's the same running gear, engine, floor pan etc as your Golf so you should know all about them?

Worth giving the fuel system and tank a good checking over and clean before running the car and check the fuel filler neck as the Mk2 Scirocco suffers the same problems with rust on it as the Mk1 Golf...

Just had the cab all in bits, spent a grand on all new fuel system, tank, pump, stainless filler neck... got the lump out at the mo, doing a proper repair on the bulkhead where the cable has pulled through. Done lots of powder coating... swing arms, suspension legs etc... looking forward to moving onto the Rocco

Rocco has the same problem with the bulk head at the very least fit a plate if there is nothing there as it will pull through at some point in it's life, you can use the Mk1 Golf repair plate but it will need cutting down to fit.

Are you on the Mk1 Golf owners club website as well as here, be interested in seeing your Sportline.

No, will sign up... had that 15 years paid £1500 for it... love it, was for her indoors more than me... I’ve always been more of a Rocco man, this is my fourth... had 3 of them in my late teens. An A reg GTI, then 2 x C reg GTXi , had countless golf mk 1 and mk 2 gtis, you never loose the bug!

So I just checked the vehicle status on GOV website, I know it had been stored for a few years, but not 27 years.... no wonder it’s seized [emoji23][emoji23]Image

Nice find! Assuming it's registered to you, make sure you submit a SORN, otherwise you're liable to get a fixed penalty notice.

I have an X1/9 that’s been untaxed since 1986 and contacted the DVLA after I tried to declare SORN and the status didn’t change online. Apparently the computers won’t accept a SORN for a car that’s been untaxed since before SORN was introduced; it would need to be taxed first.

There’s a nice restored 1.6 cl auto on eBay at the mo, really pretty little car... can’t wait to make a start on mine, cold weather is hampering me a bit at the mo
