Got it all sorted with a call to my mate at GSF and some bodgengineering and its all sorted :-)

Still smoking a tiny bit under load, another oil change and good clean through of the breather methinks!

Lovely engines both you and GTXtra have. I've been lucky enough to own both but in Golf mk1 GTi's. I've owned many high performance cars in the last 30 years but this engine in a mk1 is by far my favourite. I have all the parts including the engine to build another but work, house and family mean it will be a while before I get the chance to enjoy all that lovely low down torque.

Right bit of an update, the car's being used for VW Action then most likely being rested to up to save up for some repairs, its started to smoke on the over-run when warm and generally be a bit whiffy, guessing valve stem seals have gone, so will be saving up for a head rebuild, along with new coilovers and new exhaust, then get saving for the inevitable respray!

A few people were asking at the National about the specs of the engine, did my best to recall from memory but below are figures taken from the GTi Engineering website, showing specs and details of work undertaken

Image

The conversion comprises of:

Tuftrided EN 24 crankshaft of 94.5 mm stroke

Specially machined cylinder block with 82mm bore

Lead-indium heavy duty crankshaft bearings

Alloy autothermic pistons

Gasflowed cylinder head with enlarged port diameters

Gasflowed inlet and exhaust manifolds

Reprofiled inlet and exhaust valve seats

42 mm inlet valves

35 mm exhaust valves

Selected valve springs

Sports camshaft (276 degree period)

Modified distributor

Modified injection system

Price £2695 (1988)

Right, not much to update here really, mainly saving up for various replacement bits (exhaust, coilovers) and possibly fixing the slight oil burn issue...

Some new leads seem to have relieved the problem somewhat, with just a small puff on startup, though it still pongs like its burning oil, going to pop some tappet and stem seal treatment through the oil first before taking the engine apart.

Its currently been on daily duty as the A5 has had a snapped exhaust bracket, I've got the parts to fix it but the roc has done such a good job of it and been really enjoyable to use everyday that I've put off fixing it :P also it appears to be doing some good for her too :-D

Also keep being distracted by new wheels, I've got the compomotive TH's still but been looking at retro/90's style wheels, found some in a nice 15x7/15x8 et20 staggered affair which have been taking my fancy;

Opinions?

Well, not much has happened in the world of the red shed, although it got put on a rolling road at the end of January. However the results aren't worth posting as it was a bit down on power (combination of slack throttle cable and burning oil)

A head rebuild is very much needed now although its hard to quantify how 'down' on power she is, as most people who've gone out in her say she's much quicker than a standard DX, either way, burning oil is not great so that's moved up the priority to fix list.

However, couldn't resist picking these up at £15 off RRP :-D

hey Jon there`s an engineering place round the corner from me, proper man in a shed like.
he can do your valve guides and whatnot for not much money.
annoyingly i cant find an address but have a look at here and you can see his shed on a rather large car park in stirchley.

The shed's being dropped off on Saturday for the stem seals, front discs and pads, front wheel bearing and a cheeky stainless exhaust system ;-)

Basically rebranded Weitec's, they've not even been fitted! Got them for a lot less than brand new price 8-)

Depends when they were done I think. Some of the later GTI Eng conversions used the 2.0 bore and stroke dimensions with stock VW 2.0 bits. (82.5 x 92.8). I expect they stopped paying for special cranks when VW produced an alternative in reasonable numbers.

At mates garage having bits down, exhaust will now most likely be a fruity back box as rest of system good (and the fact that no bugger seems to have a Jetex system in stock!)

Image

Head gone off for stem seals, valve guides, skim and pressure test, chance to clean up a bit...

Image

Well....arsebiscuits.... :-(

That ladies and gents, is the crown of piston number 3, whereby it appears the cambelt has snapped at some point in the past and valve has gone squishy squishy into the piston, there's a lovely mark on the bore too....checked the history that came with the car and it had a head build in June 2011 but they obviously didn't notice or didn't care to notice the head of the piston

As it seems to run ok and it seems to have run ok in the past since this happened, hopefully new seals and guides should stop the burning of oil and fingers crossed we'll be sorted as it'll need to be rebored with TSR 2.1 pistons to fully sort that out and I just don't have that kind of money currently

OK I see what has happened. As I have been told if the cam belt does snap on these enegines the car is still driveable if you are not far from home. But of course always best to have breakdown cover. And I can see what damage can be done if they do snap.Ours will be changed as last was done when I brought back in 2012 as we have done no were near 60,000 miles.
