Time to try again. White J reg GT2.

Post by bengould »

Hopefully this will be 3rd time lucky.
Found a decent rolling shell to transfer all the remaining good bits from my old car over to.

Last Saturday morning had an early start and headed over to Dundee with a trailer to collect the new car.

Image

All went well on the way back and was home with a new toy by early afternoon.

Already managed to get the exciting bits swapped over and took her in for an MOT yesterday.

Unfortunately it was a fail, but nothing too serious.
One corroded brake line, handbrake efficiency, and had a tyre scrubbing the suspension that I managed to miss in the rush to get it all together.

Got up early before work today and sorted most of it out just got to swap out one of the brake lines with one off my old car and it will be a pass so I can get it taxed and finish off swapping over the less important bits.

Will get some decent pics of it as soon as it's cleaned up a bit.

Ben

Glad to see you've done so much so quickly!
You've achieved ten times more than I could in a year and a half haha!
Hope everything keeps going smoothly for you.

MOT passed this morning. Taxed on the way home. :-).

Need to get the tracking and camber sorted but basically it's all up and running fine. However I seem to have picked up a problem with the diverter valve from the turbo.
Seems to be boosting ok but have lost the wonderful whoosh sound when I lift my foot to change gear. Apparently a common problem for these to fail.

Will be out to give it a good clean tomorrow and hopefully take some pictures.

Ben.

Did I hear the T word? Have you swapped your 20v over already?

You certainly did.
The new car came as a rolling shell.
Started rebuilding last Saturday afternoon, was all in by Tuesday.
Engine, gearbox, gearstick & shifter cables, exhaust, front suspension and interior.
Just enough to get it through an MOT so far. Will be finishing the rest off as I get time.

Well, I know this is what you've all been waiting for...

So here are a few pics after a quick run round with the T-Cut and a wash.
Still a bit of tidying up to do but looks so much better without all the oily hand prints all over it.

Spidery Flaps. :-)

Engine bay needs a little tidying up, But it's all in there.

Interior, Fancy Recaros and wooden steering wheel.

Need to do some tidying up in here too.

And just to finish off a couple of fancy shots of the badges.

Still loads to do, but I can get it all done bit by bit and have some fun driving it too.

Just a quick update.

After throwing together the car as quick as I could I have had a list of niggly things to get finished.
One of which was the suspension.
I had built it up using the Spax front shocks off my last car but left the rears standard because the bolts had seized into the spax rears and required an angle grinder to remove.
Managed to phone Spax who very kindly offered to replace the bushes and supply me with all new nuts, bolts and bump stops. Free of charge, all I had to cover was the postage.

Got them back within a week and thought they deserved a bit of a tidying up.

Image

The powder coating had started to flake off quite badly. So out with the angle grinder with wire brush attachment.

Image

Image

A couple of coats in and they are starting to look much better already.

Image

Image

Ended up using about 4/5 light coats of yellow Hammerite.
And yet again forgot to get pictures of the final product. :dash:

Now fitted and the car is levelled off. A little higher than last time for practicality reasons, got a little bit fed up of stopping for EVERY speedbump and with the 20v sump being alloy I cant really afford to risk cracking it.

I have also managed to get hold of an 8v injection radiator, slightly longer than the carb version, and in tank lift pump from an 8v injection model which I will be using to assist the Bosch 044 main pump, maybe via a swirl pot, maybe directly, not decided which way to go yet. I need to replace the standard 6mm solid fuel lines for 8mm ones before I get stuck into that though.

About time I updated this.

After many months of turbocharged fun. Disaster struck back at the start of December.

On the way to work, driving down the motorway, completely lost power. Managed to safely roll onto the hard shoulder but the engine was not re-starting.

Called the handy free recovery included with my insurance, and got a lift back home with the car on the back of a wagon. :-(.

So into the garage for a little digging.

I took the engine out, mainly because I can, but also because it's a lot easier to work on out of the car.
After a lot of head scratching and testing, found no compression and noticed the cm pulley wasn't turning when i was turning the flywheel. Although the timing belt looked OK and felt nice and tight.

After removing the covers I found the lower pulley wasn't turning, so off it came to reveal...

Image

The built in "woodruff key" had sheared, leaving me with an engine in a similar condition to what happens if you don't change your timing belt at the required interval. No pictures but basically 8 bent inlet valves and 8 bent exhaust valves. Fortunately the pistons have survived with nothing more than a little minor scoring from the valves. Not Ideal but good enough to not need to be replaced.

As it currently sits the engine is on a stand and has been stripped of its head and all accessories, cleaned and painted, and I am now the proud owner of a complete new set of valves to fit, as soon as my head gasket kit and timing belt turns up (new stem seals too. :-) )

Have also taken the opportunity to paint the cam cover and inlet manifold too. Will be doing the gearbox too and giving the engine bay a good clean out while the engine is out of the way. Might even give it a quick once over with paint too.

All in all not what I needed over christmas, but has given me a bit of a kick up the @rse to get things I should have done when I bought the car done.
