Turns out the switched live I was going to use, wasn't. So I pulled the fusebox to find a switched live. That didn't go very well, everything I tried seemed to be permenant. So I decided to use the feed for the heater blower switch.

Joints all soldered, haven't bothered with the illumination dimmer wire (may do, but not sure what to wire it to). Only heat shrank a couple of the joints until I can get some fuses and make sure it all works ok. Once the head unit is working I can work out the speaker wires and fit another ISO plug on them. Hopefully when it's all done it should have two, properly wired ISO plugs.

It does seem that over the years amp cables have got thicker and thicker but I don't think the little ones draw a lot of ampeage, I normally have them running a 10a fuse.

The cable on this is probably one of the thickest I've used. I had a New Beetle a few years ago and it was a pain in the arse trying to get a live feed through the firewall. In the end I cut the plug off of a car hoover, wired that to the amp and plugged it into the 12v socket in the rear :?

Finished soldering and heat shrinking the joins

Image

Two thicknesses of heat shrink for a snug fit on both wires, you can see the thinner one covering the joint on the yellow wire with the thicker one further up the wire.

Tried the head unit in place

Image

It doesn't quite fit all the way home as there is a plastic mount behind it. I don't really want to chop that out (never know if you'll decide to go back to stock one day) it's only a couple of mm so I don't think it will really notice.

Fitted a Blaupunkt London in my Rocco, replaced speakers with Alpine 6x4. Good sound and function for the money

8-) Good to know. Hopefully with that lot plus the sub to add some extra depth it should sound pretty good. Fingers crossed.

Thats a very smart headunit and tidy install. Have you stuck your hand through the hole under the stereo when fitting to make sure no wires are trapped? I think I will add a switched live soon, it's annoying not having one!
