Yes, the econometer should nag you to change gear with a yellow light pretty much all the time until you're in top. I'm not sure whether the light would work in an auto, though. The swingometer should still pretend to give you an idea of fuel economy though.

The gear shift indicator works by a series of vacuum hoses, first things to check as very often overlooked!
I think VW were very forward thinking when they launched the concept back in the early '80's, some of our company cars (which are all less than a year old!) have then fitted!

My econometer works OK, but i doubt it is really of much value beyond being quite a cool thing to have.

It tells me that i can go from 50 to 25 mpg just by pressing the throttle slightly

Plus my car has never in its life done 50 mpg. on my way home from London it probably managed 40-ish tops.

40 ish is a good MPG, there are plenty of modern cars that would struggle to achieve that!

Had a little play today

Front mudflaps off to start





Only bit of rust on the drivers front wing

Looks pretty clean on the inner wing

Passenger side not quite as clean, looks like crap has sat behind the mudflap and rotted through fro the inside out

Took the inner liner out, load of wet mud and crap behind where the mudflap sat

Apart from that it looks pretty clean this side as well. Although for some reason it all looks to be body colour this side, where as there looked to be some sort of rust proofing the other side.

All the screws for the mudflaps and inner liners came out fine apart from this bugger, bit of violence soon got the liner out.

Had a look at the fuel filler neck, doesn't look too bad to me, one small section that I might replace with a bit of flexi. Inner arch looks pretty clean.

The white bit is a previous repair that someone has done, looked like it had rusted right through. I'll get a proper repair done at some point.
