Rolling road at Northampton Motorsport today to find out why the Cup car felt so slow. It felt like an ignition problem to me, from the way it drove.
Looks fast, doesn't it? It wasn't.
First run and a whopping 45.8 bhp at the flywheel. Turns out the distributor was completely seized.
So the distributor was dismantled, freed up and reassembled.
Second run much better with 98bhp at 6300 rpm and still climbing at that point (factory figure is 110 bhp @ 6100 rpm)
Before (bottom) and after (top) for comparison.
This next picture shows that the mixture is too lean. We didn't have time to sort that out today, so there will be a future return visit to sort out this, the exhaust leak, and probably to finish off the safety equipment etc so that it's ready to go on track. I'm confident we should be able to achieve more or less factory power output.

I went to Rockingham today. I might have taken one of my Sciroccos. There could be an article of interest to Scirocco enthusiasts in a future issue of Practical Classics. I will confirm that legendary motoring journalist John Simister used to own a Scirocco GLS.

This is the issue you're after:
Looking at that second photo, what strikes me is that the Scirocco takes the least styling inspiration for the modern version from the original (or at the least, it looks least like a pastiche). Whether that's good or bad will be a matter of opinion.

The mk3 was probably an independant design without a name to sell it and they didnt have faith in a new one or the corrado one to bank roll it

It was initially shown as a concept called Iroc, so I think they always intended it as a spiritual successor to the Scirocco. They just either didn't have the balls to produce a more square-cut design, or couldn't make one look good on the Golf platform of the time (or with current car regulations).

Trip to Goodwood Members' Meeting today. Bitterly cold, but a great day nonetheless. The weather had a noticeable effect on the number of classics people took with them, but I drove down the night before in OHP. Cleared all the snow off with the sponge side of my window scraper this morning, this is what it looked like before I set off home - now even dirtier and waiting for a good clean later this week to get the salt, mud and roadfilm off. My cars are for using, not museum pieces!

The door has revolved once more.
Massive house project necessitates fleet reduction.
Blue Mk1 GTI project went at the end of last year.
Silver GLi (OHP 888W) went this week.
Black GTX will probably have to go as well.
