The mk2 model range??????

Post by buggerrit »

No doubt I'm gonna get lampooned for this one - but could anyone outline the
Scirocco mk2 range for me?

I've been into aircooleds for a while now but as I'm getting older I have found myself drawn
to the flip side of vw ing? A quick flick thru ebay, a couple of random (low) bids
and I ended up winning an '88 scala auto that I had honestly forgotten I had bid on!
Long story but nearly two weeks later I picked the car up from Chippenham, did my usual
50 mph for the first few miles, 70 for a few more (wheels wobbled a bit) up to 85 and she
was singing to me!!! Really enjoyed the trip back to Exmouth and decided there and then
that my aircooled days were firmly behind me, then the enormity of my decision sank in over
the next few days - I know sweet bugger all about these little cars apart from the fact
that mine makes me smile whenever I get behind the wheel !

Hence the request for information about the model range - cos I doubt very much whether I'll
be faithfull to just one 'rocco ( I've just paid up for a two car insurance policy and it would be a shame
not to get my monies worth) - see I'm already thinking up the excuses to give the missus

The name "scala"suggests it should be "special" but it's very basic
I had a GT2 - or rather the other half (at the time) did, that seemed basic as well.
Which are the quick ones to look out for and which ones offer slightly more creature
comforts?
I really like the euro look so will probably head off down that direction in the future.
Sorry for the monologue but I've already got another couple of cars in the watch list
so any model info would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping to make Plymouth meet , will defo be going to Bristol at end of month - hope to meet
some of you there!

I wouldnt say the scala is a basic model .. the GT2 was the runout but came with later technological advances as options extras leccy windows and central locking seem to be more common on these models..

If you want most extras try and find a storm.. otherwise be on the lookout for something with aftermarket mods thats a bit special, like I did :good:

They are largely 1970s technology. Of course they're basic. Electric windows and an mfa represent the height of sophistication in a scirocco. Gtx, storm, gti or injected scala are the ones to look out for in my opinion, although some do prefer the carbed 1.8. A good gtx is my pick of the bunch.

Thx guys, Bluestreak I tend to agree with you in buying an already
"improved" rocco. I made a wish list for my scala and if I carried the
work out I could possibly spend way more than the price of a fully
sorted car would cost to buy!
Think I'm gonna save some pennies and buy a real nice one.
I've noticed people have a tendancy to rename their cars along
the rocco theme so from now on mine shall be called-

Rattyrocco

That is unless someone objects on copyright grounds :focus:

P.S Love the smileys!

I've an 88 VW range brochure and they called the scala "a special made standard" but hardly base as it was fully colour coded had 1.8 and alloys when the GT had steels and black trim......... and the later scala i replaced the top of the range GTX.

I'd have k-jet over leccy windows and central locking any day!

Surely the most important thing to know about Scirocco's is what you've already stated "I know sweet bugger all about these little cars apart from the fact
that mine makes me smile whenever I get behind the wheel !" Classic comment

Anyways, i've got an '88 GTX and YESSS they are fun, but as i'm sure others will tell you, Scirocco's are extremely tunable.

Good luck in your great adventure, and with the Missus.
