Genuine VW oil filter
Drain plug and washer

Bosch Air and Fuel filter

Wynn's radiator flush

No I think you have the parts you need for a basic service.

Tool I use for the gearbox plugs.

Tool I use for the hose clamps, there is a proper tool you can buy.

Good website with every thing you ever wanted to know about the gearbox

Update! Oil, coolant and filters are done!

Little niggles

Could not release the transmission drain pug.

Little bit of oil around the orange edge of the air filter. Guessing breather. Absolutely not excessive but is a little normal for a carb set up?

While the car was jacked nudged the wheels and a slight bit of play 12 - 6. Would this be the wheel bearings? Or is slight play normal ok?

Play at 12 - 6 may be the top mounts, they don't seem to last very long now a days. You can also check for movement but jacking up the car and placing a bar underneath the wheel and lift the bar up and down while listening for knocking and movement on the nut at the top mount. If there is many more than a fingers gap between the metal top plate and rubber bush then the top mount is on its last

What tool did you use on the gearbox drain plug and how did you go at it?

The 17mm hex and a socket wrench. Only a small one, maybe need a bit more leverage and WD40! Filler plug came straight out.

I'll check the top mounts but in honesty they look really good. I think this may be a job to take for MOT and see what they say.Way beyond my knowledge and skills.

Oh, I also managed to get a Haynes manual too. In the wrapper! A little light reading on an evening.

Yes a bigger bar might be needed to undo the drain plug, make sure you clean as much dirt etc from in the drain plug where the socket goes so it's less likely to slip and round off.

When filling the oil up in the gearbox you can either leave the car on the floor (all wheels on) on a level floor and turn the wheels to full lock left and you should have enough room to get your head in there and see the filler hole and get some oil in till it starts to pour our, you need to go slowly as if you pour it in to fast it just flows back out.

The other way is leave the passengers side wheel off and lower the car on the jack to its level then fill the gearbox with oil.

Which every way you do you will need a funnel with a tube on or a tube to go on the end of the the bottle to get the oil in.

Got a funnel with pipe, thanks for the tips, I'm sure that will save a lot of doubt.

What do you think about the oil around the air filter. Just the orange edge, not actually on the filter material, strange!?

Are there any links to pics of your Mk1, would love to see!

Normal for a little oil on the air filter as there's a breather on the rocker cover which goes in to the air intake so don't worry about it.
If you plan on keeping the car a few years it's worth investing in a K&N panel air filter, the type which fits in the standard air box as they last for years so no need to buy another air filter.

I would love to show you a link to my build thread on my Mk1 scirocco but all my photos are blocked by photobucket unless I pay them money to show them, I'll try and unload some pictures to a different site to host pictures and update my threads in the next week or so.

It's a fun car to own, MOT time for mine on Friday, I've got to fit 2 new front top mounts as the MEYLE set I fitted last year, 4,000 miles ago are shot already so don't buy any of those and I've gone back to FEBI now.

New water pump also ready to go on as the old one is getting noisy.

Ho'my, I'm having a moment!!!

That is soo nice. Are you at the national meet, I'd love to meet up, see it and take some pictures?

The grey is amazing, what's the name? Possibly my favourite colour for cars.

Let it be known! - I'm having 1st refusals if she ever needs a new home and looking after :-D

If you can change the gearbox oil as it's very often over looked 2L is plenty as I've only ever managed to fit in 1 1/2L when changing mine, you need a 17mm Allen key for there is a special socket you can get from eBay to undo the filler and drain plugs, just undo the filler 1st as if you have problems undoing that and you have drained the oil you are stuck. Fill up in the filler hole till it pours out then screw the plug back in.

or, fill from the speedo drive hole in the top.
