Newbie / Serviceable items?

Post by Atom »

Hi everyone!

New to the forum and ownership, not just the scirocco but classic motoring too.

So far so good and loving every drive.

I would like to give the car a full service. I will be doing it myself with a good friend (fortunately a mechanic).

For the vehicles history I will keep recipts of all the items, is self service acceptable or do people need to see stamps in a book.

Part of the charm is being able to do bits by yourself, what is the genral consensus on this?

Finally, for the service I was going to do oil, filters - oil/air/fuel and spark plugs.

Should I be adding anything else to the list as a matter of course?

Thanks in advance and look forward to contributing to the site in the future.

Once vehicles get to this age I don't think people expect to see a stamped service book. I certainly wouldn't!

If you're doing the plugs, may as well do the leads. In my experience they're more of a wear item than the plugs.

Give the brakes a visual check over too.

Personally when i get a new car, just for my own piece of mind I typically run through;

- Filters - (Use VW filters)
- Oil - General consensus here is to go for Quantum Syntra.
- Coolant - Change if it's looking dirty as it's probably broken down and not offering much in the way of protection.
- Ignition (plugs, leads, rotor, cap)
- Brakes ( The drums in the rear in particular. I've had 5 mk2s and each one has suffered from leaking slave cylinders)
- Pull the top cambelt cover off to check the condition of the belt (I never trust the seller saying "Cambelt done recently) Very cheap and easy investment for peace of mind.
- On Axel stands give all four wheels a good 9-3 and 12-6 movement to check for play.
- Lower ball joints and track rod ends too (Usually there will be visual signs of wear as well as excess play if they're shot)
- Inspect the fuel filler neck for corrosion...Must better to catch this issue early! ( Cut the old fuel filter open when you replace it to look for any signs of contaminates in the fuel)
- If you're on a carb it's worth keeping a rebuild kit in stock even if not immediately required.
- If the car has aftermarket wiring (Alarms etc) I typically rip this out, Personal hatred for aftermarket wiring...Can never trust it!

Most of it is more preventative, but you can go as far as you like.

What car did you get?

as above really. I just do spark plugs, leads, rotor arm and cap, oil, oil filter, coolant, fuel filter and air filter. i would probably replace the brake fluid too if not done recently as it does deteriorate. check the wheel bearings whilst its jacked up.

Also, lift the back seat out and there is a round cover with 3 screws, undo it and remove the sensor below(be careful not to lose the ends of the pipes). This will allow you to look right into the fuel tank and you will probably see lots of rust floating about (or not floating). drop a magnet in there and it will collect it up over time, preventing blocking your fuel lines which is mega common!

Thank you guys for such a quick a detailed response, much appreciated!!

With all that in mind, I think this is the plan!

I will get 5lt VW Oil Quantum Synta 10W-40 £18 eBay.

Bosch filters oil/air/fuel (not sure where to find VW)

Ignition - Plugs (Bosch), Rotor (Bosch), Leads (BBT), cover JP.

Euro Car Parts £52

£70 total, and do myself.

How does that sound?

Coolant and brake fluid next, is there a specific type or grade for either?

I have a cam belt receipt for 2016, also looks in very good condition. I will however get a second opinion!

Car is due MOT beginning of Sept, I may get his done early and have brakes, bearings and suspension checked. Replace if needed.

Steve, I will be sure to check the fuel tank also, thanks for that one buddy!

Is that the 5th Aug?

It may be a case of that or the VW fest week after.

Hopefully squeeze both!

MANN oil filter or vw are the ones to go for, Euro car parts does sell MANN filters

http://www.eurocarparts.com/oil-filter

Always use the discount code and either free delivery or click and collect as it cost more to just turn up at the desk as they don't give you as much discount, weekend are the usually the best discounts.

Euros sister company are sometimes cheaper.

Genuine filters and Quantum oil

http://www.vwspares.co.uk

Coolant I use.
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volks ... &0&cc5_865

Don't forget a new sump plug washer when changing the oil.

If you can get Bosch HT leads I dont think the BBT stuff is very good.

Dot 4 brake fluid.

If you can change the gearbox oil as it's very often over looked 2L is plenty as I've only ever managed to fit in 1 1/2L when changing mine, you need a 17mm Allen key for there is a special socket you can get from eBay to undo the filler and drain plugs, just undo the filler 1st as if you have problems undoing that and you have drained the oil you are stuck. Fill up in the filler hole till it pours out then screw the plug back in.

Good upgrade to fully synthetic

Thank you Mark1gls, much appreciated.

I've sourced the quantum oil and genuine VWfilter (inc. plug/washer), along with air and fuel filter from AVS.

ECP have 35% off at the moment. I'll get coolant and a flush from there. Do you get the concentrate or 50/50 mix, would 5l of 50/50 enough?

That's this weekends job.

Next on the list - ignition system, Brakes and yes, I had overlooked the gearbox oil, thanks for that.

5L bottle is plenty, I use the 50 /50 ready mixed stuff as saves the hassle of mixing it as you should really use distilled water and not tap water.
Worth removing and either check or replace the thermostat, if just checking it you will need a new rubber gasket.
49p with out any discount from Euro car parts.

http://www.eurocarparts.com/thermostat-housings-gasket

Go careful with the plastic housing as you can have problems resealing them.

Good shop on ebay which I would recommend, the kit they sell has everything in.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK1-C ... Y4lOAFl8aQ

Or just the housing.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mk1-2-golf-th ... SwuxFYuEjr

Don't forget to look under Mk1 Golf as they share alot of parts, the similar age Mk1 Golf cabriolet shares alot of the same things.

No worries, always happy to help and on here most days.

We should or perhaps there is a list/guide of places we use/recommend where we buy stuff from.

Some others which you may find helpful

http://www.classic-vw.co.uk/

https://www.vwheritage.com/

http://www.newtoncomm.co.uk/home/

Good place to get hard to find parts but they are based in Germany.
