1985 MKII Engine Oil Question

Post by MikeS0000 »

Hi Folks -

This is a JH Engine, 1.8L, 8 valve and it calls for an oil with an API SF. The only thing I can find i the US that is close is an AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle oil. This is the description:

"Synthetic High Performance 20W-50 Motorcycle Engine Oil

AMSOIL Synthetic High Performance 20W-50 Motorcycle Engine Oil is specially formulated to provide tough lubricating protection in the most demanding operations. It is recommended for use in all four-cycle motorcycle and ATV engines, including those with wet clutch systems requiring API CD, SG-CG or SH-CD oils.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils are specially formulated with high levels of zinc and phosphorous for superior protection of cam lobes and other high pressure components. In fact, AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils contain more zinc and phosphorous than other popular motorcycle oils (see graph). AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils leave a wear scar up to 40 percent smaller than the scars left by other popular brands in the ATM D4172 Four-Ball Wear Test.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil
SAE 20W-50 API Service SJ, SH, SG, SF, CH-4, CG-4, CF-2, CF, CD, JASO MA - Product Code: AMV"

Any ideas if this is OK, or for a replacement?

Thanks!
- Mike

Why not use normal 10W 40 semi synthetic oil?

Why do you want to use the API SF oil?

That's what the Service Manual and I believe, (but will double check) the Owner's Manual call for. Seems there was zinc and some other additives it needed. But I'm not an oil expert. But seems I may become one!! :?

VW uk would stick this oil in and many of us also use it.
Are you in the USA? Depending on what temperature it gets outside you may need to adjust the oil range.

Yup! I am in the US. I found some German oil that would work, but can't imagine the hurdles to importing it, if even they would ship here.

you are right about the zinc. in the uk and many other countries the zddp content has been removed to be kinder to the environment however he zinc has protective qualities for all the cam gear and other moving parts that arent adequately protected.
see link https://www.thoughtco.com/debunking-the ... end-726162
good news though is you can buy it as an additve
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/East-Coast-Z ... Sw65FXqe7P
this is what i and many others use to replace the zinc content.

Wonderful! I will order up a few bottles. Will still try to see if the Amsoil or Lucas oils have zinc added. So far no one has responded to my inquiries, :-(

Many thanks James!

I bought the Castrol GTX 10W-40 part synthetic oil but what has turned up is the ultraclean synthetic oil. Is this ok still to use or can it cause problems?

It's this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Castrol-GTX- ... 6bQk1QbU5w

Cheers

Thanks Guys!

Here is what I found, and purchased a case of, from Amazon no less!! :? :swoon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052 ... UTF8&psc=1

Says on the label, for 1988 and earlier cars. Haven't tried it yet, as we are in the Deep Freeze, I think we will be above ZERO F in a day or two.

Best regards!
