Scoping out Work required for a MK1 Scirocco
Hi all
First time posting , but long time reader of the forums with a couple of different user accounts over the years. Hoped I would be able to finally ask for some advice about buying
I attended the meetup last year but dont currently own a Scirocco. Previously I owned a 1979 GLS ( Gold ) XON 139T and a 1981 Storm ( blue ) PPF 959W , sadly both no longer with us since the late 1990's
Looking at Mk1 Sciroccos now it seems I have to consider a number of things as per the suggested list from this site but dont know how much budget I would need for this - would someone kindly indicate rough pricing to carry out the following jobs / recommended garages for work on a Mk 1
I am not as interetested in the standard servicing items but would be curious as to how much this lot would cost me approx. This seems to be the items I would probably most want doing if I bought one
cambelt and waterpump
carb refurb
fuel line replacement
fuel filler neck replacement
conversion to unleaded - if possible
Any other suggested items need checking/replacing - if so costing for those too would be really helpful
Thank you

Cambelts can be bought for as little as £7 - it all depends what brand you prefer. Gates/Continental would be ones that I trust.
Example https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/cambelt-15 ... 4725-p.asp
Water pumps £30 and up. Again, many brands/suppliers. I bought an SKF one for around £30. Beware some are only the front impeller half of the pump.
Don't forget new thermostat - and you may as well get a new plastic thermostat housing as well.
Carb refurb - no idea. New Weber direct replacement carb - around £370.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SCIROCCO- ... SwhcJWIkhQ
Fuel lines - lots of options (inc DIY rubber hose for a carb car)- some examples here
https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/fuel-pumps ... -354-c.asp
Filler neck - genuine ones still possibly available from Volkswagen Classic Parts - £100 or so
All Sciroccos will run unleaded - carbs without any modification, injections need timing adjustment. I always use the premium version of fuel wherever I fill up.

Re: Scoping out Work required for a MK1 Scirocco
I used a tin top Mk1 Golf fuel filler neck on my Mk1, it needs a little tweak of the bracket to fit, the filler cap is on a very slight different angle but other than that it fits.
Just get it painted with stone chip paint before fitting and after a test fit.
Golf filler necks are £40.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PETROL-FUEL- ... fc1353944e
You also need to fit a new cambelt tensioner when fitting a new belt, they are approx £20.
All VW water cooled engines from 1974 ish will run on unleaded fuel, 1.6 carb cars will run on old 2 star petrol 91 RON but its no longer available so normal 95 RON unleaded petrol is ok, Fuel injected cars run best on 98 ish RON super unleaded petrol.

Thanks Mark
Would a lead replacement additive be required at intervals ?
Shell optimax the way forward ?

No additive needed, it’s only old British cars that need lead in the petrol, Germany was way ahead in lead free petrol and VW fitted hardened valves and valve seats so no mod needed.
Shell optimax or any other super unleaded petrol is only needed with a fuel injected cars, carburettor cars are well happy with the cheaper normal unleaded fuel and you won’t gain any benefit using super unleaded.

i am in south birmingham sp11ker and can help you with a variety of mechanical and electrical if you can travel or accomadate costs.
if you only want tech advice again i can help you as well as the forum.
its well worth using the search function as nearly every aspect of rocco owner ship will have been covered at some point.
