Mk1 storm out of storage at last!

Post by Stormboy »

My mothers mk1 storm has been in a garage for nearly 10 years! She has owned the car for 27 years, bought in 1987 it was taken on many vw shows before being put away in 2004 unfortunately she can no longer drive and I have now inherited it, early! So need to get it back up to top condition, picture shows the car seeing daylight for the first time in 10 years!

That's what I want to do, what you can't see is the sills! They both need replacing and the rear quarter valance is also rotten, the rear arches have a few bubbles but the wings, inner, wings, doors, scuttle tailgate, bonnet are all rust free, not even a bubble! It seems the underside has suffered though, no holes in the floor but where the rear subframe bolts is iffy, so that would need to be done and of course the brake and fuel lines.... I can't let it rot, not only because it's been in my family for 26years (second owner) but mk1s are just so thin on the ground.

Lovely looking car, at least all the panels you need are easy to get hold. I've fitted front inner wheel arch liners in my mk1 to stop the mud and dirt sitting above the front indicator as that's a great rust trap, well worth it as front wings are like hens teeth and genuine VW ones even rearer.
Keep us updated on progress and always good to see pictures.

Thanks, yea fitting front wheel arch liners is a great idea and one I will defiantly do, like you said its a major rust trap. Fortunately the car was always garaged and the wings are perfect but I want to keep them that way, just need to find a really good body shop who will do a proper job of fitting the sills, I don't mind paying for a good job. More pics to follow.

Ant (username The Autoad) on here runs a body shop near Nottingham. He is something of a Scirocco specialist, so there won't be many people who will understand the work involved, and he does a great job at a good price.

I think it was a trimsport special from back in the day - they may have sold a few, but I've never seen any apart from on this one....
