Help... some gearbox gremlins mid road trip!

Post by rattyscala »

Hey so we are heading to Croatia from Bristol and started to have gearbox issues. Lightly noisy/light whine gearbox and jumps out of 5th gear.

Given its Sunday (France shuts on sundays) all I could get was some 15/40 to top up the oil by taking speedo off gearbox). Its not jumping out now but my question is if I stop driving now and drain/fill with gearbox oil do you think it will be ok for another 1500 miles over 6 days doing constant 70mph or should I abandon the trip and limp home (600 miles) at 50mph?

As long as you can get the drain plug out and filler plug out to refill the gearbox up with the right amount of the right oil fingers crossed you should be ok but not knowing what damage may have been done or history etc it's really hard to say yes "100% you will make it...."

You will need to find some level ground to fill up the gearbox to the right level.

I find about 1 and 1/2 to 3/4 L will fill the gearbox so 2 bottles is plenty.

Hypoid gear oil SAE 90EP is what Haynes say you need.

first signs of low oil is the 5th gear jumping out.
only way to found out if theres damage done is simply fill it up and drive it, you will soon find out if whine continues

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!
