Standard Wheels Tyre Recommendations
Having a little trouble finding decent tyres in the standard 185/60 HR14 format and wondered what everyone else was running with?
After tralling the 'net I have managed to locate a set of Goodyear F1 GS-D2 in that size but V rated which seem to get good reviews although I am a little confused as there seems to be 3 different types of F1 and all my local tyre fitters say they are now obsolete in that size. Locally I can only find Vredestein Hi-trac. Goodyear Excellence and Bridgestone ER300.
I'm a bit fed up reading tyre reviews now so would love to know what everyones else has got
Also, has anyone bought tyres online before - is it easy to get a local tyre centre to fit tyres you supply?

Re: Standard Wheels Tyre Recommendations
where are you based Phil?
I find the local tyre independents are the best way to go. let us know where you are then i am sure someone will recommend a firm.
Of the brand names Yokohama, Bridgestone, Michelin, Pirelli and Continental should all do correct HR rated tyres in this size.
found this too - never used them.

Re: Standard Wheels Tyre Recommendations
I'm based in Suffolk, just outside Ipswich.
The problem I am finding is that I can get certain tyres in the size but not decent performance ones, they all seem to be limited to midrange touring tyres until you go up to 15" wheels :(
Will check out the link you posted though, cheers

I've used both and they're good and prices include delivery - either check mytyres for local fitters or have a word at your local kwik-fit type place and they will usually fit them for about £10 per wheel.
I'd ignore the speed rating of the tyre, V, H etc ... they'll all do what you want ;)
Personally I'm a big fan of Toyo Proxes but I don't think they're available in your size - So I'd look at the Falkens, not tried them on the 'rocco but had them on another car and they gave good grip and wore well. For the best grip I'd go for Goodyear Eagle F1's, still available @ mytyres but £20 a piece more than the Falkens. I've heard good things about the Conti's, but not tried them myself and they're about the same price as the F1's ....

Got Falken's on the front, grips pretty decent but the poverty spec rears make for an interesting driving experience at times!

Goodyear F1 GS-D2 185/60/14
I've been using these on mine for at least 8 years now - i have no complaints at all - grip in all conditions - even worked in the snow - i'd recommend these all day long
Wear slowly too so the extra cash upfront balances over the life of tyre
Remember - buy cheaply, pay twice - and these are the only things on the car that touch the road - buy the best you can - your brakes are only as good as the grip your tyres generate

Re: Standard Wheels Tyre Recommendations
I hear on V. good authority that best 2 brands are pirelli which excel in performance and michelin for durability (though both brands are good for both attributes). Most common car that shares the same tyre size as Sciroccos are peugot 205s. Hope that helps.
I always go for nearly new part-worns in premium brands as a full set is cheaper than one tyre new. As long as the fronts are a matching pair and the tyre styles match on the others, the performance should be indistinguishable from a brand new set of similar quality. Depends if you can find a supplier thast will allow you to be picky about used tyres. Most will tell you to stop wasting their time as the margins are so low. I pay around £20 per tyre including fitting when the aspect ratio is 40 plus. That's usually the main price factor. Very low profiles almost impossible to find and expensive. Always buy front tyres in pairs.

Re: Standard Wheels Tyre Recommendations
In my humble opinion and 26 years of driving, it is always best to buy brand new
and the best make you can afford. All the top brands are decent, you get what you pay for.
I have Pirellis on the Scirocco and Continentals on the A4.
In this recession it is a buyers market, shop around for the best quote, then do what I did, rang
Kwik Fit told them my best quote (minus a few quid!), sure as hell they want you hard earned so will
beat the price.
Tyres are the only part of the car that is in contact with the road!
