Refurbishing wheels

Post by Nigel GTII »

I've recently bought a set of the 12 hole steel wheels - what's the best way to refub steels? Iknow with alloy wheels you get the best finish by dipping the whole wheel in an acid bath ( specialist job) and powder coating but how do they refurb steel wheels? and can anyone recommend someone within 20 miles of Croydon Surrey.

I've also now got a set of the plastic centre hub caps which have been oversprayed - badly ! - whats the best way to get the paint off back to the base plastic without damaging it - I guess Nitromores will attack the plastic as it's very corrosive?

Cheers - Nigel

Best way to refurb is to remove the tyres and get them professionally powder coated, let the strip paint etc. The hub caps u will have to rub down with sand paper I'd use 320 grit then 800, I wouldn't use any chemicals as your likely to damage the plastic.

Thx - spoke to my local body shop man who uses a place that sand blasts the wheels then powder coats you get the best finish and he will as you say rub down and spay with the nearest matching paint colour - the powder coat people work with RAL colour numbers. There might be a slight shade difference as one to steel the other to plastic. can't ait to get them back the my Scirocco will be 100% original.

I'll then have a set of five spoke aftermarket alloys for sale !

Steels wheels nicely sand blasted and powder coated

Just waiting for the centre caps and rings to be done - Anybody who has the original steel wheels can you tell me if the trim rings colour match the wheels or are they shiny and polished - hard to tell from pictures - Thanks

The plastic rings are the same colour as the wheel eg silver.
I think you could buy some chrome trim rings as a mod for a bit more bling...
