1.8t conversion fuel pump/ swirl pot

After some advice from previous 20v converters. My car was originally carb so no fuel pump, I've got a Bosch inline pump which I can fit straight after the tank which will work, but I have also got a 1lt fuel swirl pot, so I could use a lift pump to the swirl pot and then inline pump to engine, fuel return to swirl pot and then swirl overflow back to main fuel tank. My question is- has anyone gone either route and had any problems and also what lift pump have people used? Or should I just inline pump straight from tank to engine?

What year is your mk2?

Post-84 with 55 litre tank use the standard mk2 Scirocco/mk1 Golf cabriolet lift pump.
Pre-84 with 40 litre tank use just the inline pump.

Use the lift pump from an injection car to feed your swirl pot and feed your main pump from that. It will give the main pump a bit less work to do and will eliminate fuel starvation on bends/steep hills. I ran with just a lift pump and main pump for a while but had to put a swirl pot in due to this.

daft question but would it be better just to have a tank with the out let at the bottom of the fuel tank?


I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

Yeah my outlet is at the bottom of the tank I think, but when you hoon it round a corner all the fuel could spill to other side of tank and I'd have fuel starvation

Carb tank has no "outlet" as such - it's just pipes going in via the sender unit - the same place as the lift pump would go.

Yes. But don't forget you'll need to wire it in. In theory - as the injected and carb cars have the same fuse box - if you were to get hold of the rear loom from an injected car it would plug straight in as would the fuel pump relay. In theory.....

Yeah I was thinking that. If not a fuel pump loom is pretty easy to knock up.

Pump in question - to be found on mk2 Scirocco / mk1 Golf Cabriolet injection from mid-84 onwards and also mk3 Polo 1991-93 ish. As you can see, the top flange is identical to carb cars.

The one in the picture above is from a Polo as Mk2 Scirocco and Mk1 Golf cabriolet have the electrical connection on a different angle, Polo pump straight up and Scirocco/Golf on a 90 degree angle.

I'm doing the same conversion, bought the lift pump from Ben on here which is going to feed this, it's a swirl pot & main pump in one... anybody tried this method or just me? It's going into the boot floor as my brakes are too big for a space saver anyways Image

that looks like a good idea conner.
webcon sell them cheaper though as i think thats where demon tweaks get them from

its worth talking to ant who modded the tank to take the standard pump and swirl pot from audi a3 tank as its designed for this engine.

scroll down towards the bottom and you will see.
theres a guy who runs a place called readyrads in Birmingham who cuts tanks up for rust treatment who should have no problem doing the fabrication work for you to fit the original pump.
just another avenue you could look at.
if you give shane crosby a shout aka scrappy1382 he now owns the car so might be able to get some more pictures of it and some dimensions.
