I've ended up getting her towed to a local garage where he says I need a new distributor.
Can anyone tell me how much these go for and where should I start looking?

I've changed the title of this thread as it was slightly confused.

Re: Fuelling problem gtx distributor?
Has anybody had any experience getting there fuel distributor reconditioned or repaired?
Any idea how much they charge to do this?
Can anyone recommend a good place for this?
I found a couple of places in UK that do it.
This one looked good http://www.kmipetrolinjection.co.uk/index.htm

Depends what is wrong with the distributor, but it's more or less a mechanical device, so reasonably easy to recondition. With the right tools you could probably do it yourself.

KMI are good, I'm pretty sure they're the people used by Rust Republic for their restorations.

Re: Fuelling problem gtx fuel distributor repair recondition
Sorry been a while.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
It was old fuel and something blocked in fuel distributor so yes mechanical. Distributor fixed.
Small leak fixed. Got fresh petrol.
Car now runs.
Need to get a new fuel filter and fit it. I mistook the accumulator for a filter before and because it didn't look right I left it at the shop.
Idles slightly high at nearly 1000 revs but not taken her for a decent run so going to wait and see if it settles after a new filter and drive.

Re: Fuelling problem gtx fuel distributor repair recondition
Glad you got it going.
950 to 1000 rpm idle is where it should be, I set mine at 1000 rpm as it seems happier and less rattles.
When changing the fuel filter try and replace the 4 washers on the fuel filter, 2 each end, you may get 1 in the box, 1 end is the same size as a sump plug washer and the other end slightly smaller, that is usually the 1 that comes with the filter.

Get a good quality filter like MANN, if you have the bigger type filter (1984 onwards) this will fit.
1st one I found so shop around but the link/picture has the part number.

Smaller pre 1984 ish cars use this type of filter.

Thanks for the top tips mark1gls. I will get some sump washers although I'm pretty sure I have some stashed from my previous cars somewhere...
I did get a MANN (and yes it was a bit cheaper ) I toyed with a Framm one but then thought go with what you know works for the sake of a few quid. Glad I did.
However my car (1.8 gtx DX 1986) although is a later one seems to have the smaller filter in. I'm hoping the clip/holder will fit round the bigger one but there is quite a difference in size. The MANN is a lot bigger.
Should I just replace like for like. Seems like a safer option.
Does that mean you get more filter inside- more MANN filter for your money!
Why is there such a difference in size?
Is it just a change in OEM suppliers.
Please feel free to ignore those last questions it's been a long day!

Re: Fuelling problem gtx fuel distributor repair recondition
Not sure why VW fitted a bigger fuel filter for later cars, perhaps better filtration with a bigger filter?
The filter is just held in place with a big jubilee clip so you many need to buy a bigger clip to hold it in place, you will find it easier and cheaper to get the later bigger filter.

It's best to replace the fuel filter every 2 years/20,000 miles as the injection system is sensitive and with these older cars having a metal fuel tank, metal fuel lines and a filler neck which is prone to rust.
